View Full Version : Memory usage
mo_pic 12-01-2002, 08:37 PM Does MAX really uses the virtual memory?
There is more then enough physical memory.
The image shows a part of the Summery Info dialog.

Ya I am wondering that too, same for photoshop. When I turn off virtual memory photoshop doesn't even want to load, gives me an error :P My new disk is quite fast, but like.. still :/ Can't beat actual RAM hehe

This is more a problem with Windows than individual apps. They make thier ram requirement need to windows and windows decides how much will be physical and how much virtual then reports back how much for each.

Well yes.. but if I turn off Virtual Memory entirely windows runs for sure and like.. the application states it needs it :/ Photoshop won't load for me gives me an error stating that Virtual Memory has to be on :/ Thats lame but..
Isn't there a way to tweak that? I thought I saw someting at tweakmanager.com or a similar site.
If i remember you can disable virtual memory until all the physical is used off of the Ram via the registry. I might be wrong, but if your concerned about it, set up two hard drives in an array so that you optimize the virtual ram and increase your overall hard drive speed.

If this is possible to enable thru the registry... I sure as hell want to know how.
I'm sick of my RAM going to waste, not being fully harnessed.

I'll start looking it up and contacting a few friends to see if they have anything to suggest or download. I'll post it when I know for sure.

No no i wasnt asking for that :/ Ya I already know of the reg tweak which makes the system load its system files (including registry) into RAM... but like when i turn virtual memory entirely off (no more no more!) if I try to start photoshop it prevents me from using it saying that virtual memory must be used with photoshop :/ If you have a tweak for THAT it would help :D 3dsmax ran fine with virtual memory off though.
I'll talk to a few people then to see what is possible with Adobe. I believe it is possible.

when you said turn Virtual Memory off, is that mean you set the value of the virtual memory in performence option (win2k) to totally 0 ?
I would like to know on how to disable virtual memory in regedit too.
