View Full Version : Short Movie: Domination

about:
We, as Babun Film (http://www.babun.org), are an experienced group of people, shooting short movies since 1999 but using Babun Film name since 2002. We are greatly known and watched in our country for our non-profit works.

Movie:
"Domination" is our newest and the biggest project. It's a short movie about an old species of earth, coming forward in the future and taking the earth back from humans for their betrayal on nature. It will be told from only one creature's perspective who is followed by some cops and caught on a rooftop. But cops see what it is when the city around them starts to be devastated by explosions those creatures produce. While the creature kills the cops one by one, we also learn their story.

It will be around 10-15 minutes and will be shot on a set with bluebox. Sevket Coruh, a professional and well known actor from our country will play the lead and we are waiting news from another well known actress, Ozge Ozberk. Also a famous music band called Manga is going to write a special song for the credits.

Shootings will start at the begining of Summer 2006.

Designs:
You can find some character designs and some promotional material here:
Creature Full (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/kadin_boy_normal.jpg)
Creature Full - Costume (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/kadin_boy_giysili.jpg)
Creature Face - Front (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/kadin_yuz_on.jpg)
Crature Face - Side (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/kadin_yuz_yan.jpg)
Cop Leader (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/officer.jpg)
Cop Specialist (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/specialist.jpg)
Police Vehicle (Still Working On) (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/arac_ufak.jpg)
Promotional Art (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/domination_promo.jpg)

CG:
We need professional help for CG because our group is not experienced on that account.

There will be some key CG elements on the movie:
- Future City of Istanbul (Night)
- Destroyed City of Istanbul (Twilight)
- Flying Police Vehicle
- A Sphere Spy Cam
- Some morphing effects for creature's skin turning to bark etc.

Need:
We need all the CG help we can get, including Concept Art for the Future City.

What You Can Expect:
We plan to get attention with this project since it will have a famous cast and some technical achievements for a short movie. Also we plan to shoot a music video for Manga as a token of our gratitude for their special song. That video will have the same environment with the movie and that means the CG work will be on TVs, too (At least in Turkey for now)

If everything goes as we planned (it is for now) CG crew will have something they can use proudly in their portfolios.

We don't expect to get any money with this work but there will be a looking for fund. If we can get enough fund, there can also be some payment but that's never a promise and even if we can pay, I can't say how much it will be.

Thank you dodo3d. I sent you a PM for details. It's great to meet people through here.

We need a concept artist for the environment as well as 3d artists. Is there anyone for that, too?

Hi J3 (yep I read that right :P), and welcome aboard then.

Right now we have the design limits for the city buildings. I sent you a PM for it.

I am the compositor by the way and I am experienced in that aspect. But if someone better comes along, it's better for me too :)

JIII, denntanos and dodo3d joined in and we are communicating through a mailing list now. Some work has already started. We are working on how to collapse buildings in a more realistic way right now. Also JIII is modelling the spy cam.

But we still need a concept artist for the city very urgently. We also need some texture makers and more modelling help would be appreciated.

madcan

Now there is a concept artist working on the city for some time. He is going to finish the city's concept art by this week and then modelling for the city will begin.

Our concept artist, Nephtali Andres Leal Garza who is from Mexica, draw this concept art for the city and it really captured what I had in mind. JIII liked it too and now he is working on the city while Nephtali is working on the destroyed city.

i'm good with modeling vehicles, props, particle effects and architecture. i use autocad for my 3d architecural modeling, and a combination of 3ds and wings3d for my prop and vehicle modeling and of course i use 3ds for the particle work. i am also working with learning compositing and post production work. if i could take a crack at it, i would be very greatful, the practice would be appriciated.

JIII
04-22-2006, 01:39 PM
Alright dude, I will send you an e-mail or PM with the details in the next few days.

As soon as I get off my butt and finish the layout of the city etc we can start modelling the buildings that need to be done. However, I don't think AUTOcad is what we want to model buildings in, as these have to be very poly-conscious :-).

I will let you know man,

Thanks,

-JIII

04-22-2006, 09:12 PM
just let me know the counts you need for them and i'll make sure they are. i only do my base modeling in autocad so i can use the floorplan to actually get it set up. i do all my finishing work in 3ds, so the poly counts won't be an issue. i would really like to do the vehicles if you don't have anyone assigned to them as of yet. Also, if you are rendering in 3ds, i have a small farm here i would volunteer for you, take some of the load off of your comptuers. it's not much, but every frame helps.

JIII
04-23-2006, 01:41 PM
Rendering is being done on a scene by scene basis depending on each artists and each programs input and capiblities.

The only vehicle is being done by Tanyeli, an artist in Istanbul, right now. However, if any other vehicles come up I will let you know.

Expect more pretty soon,

Hello again after a long time.

This weekend we had our shots but meanwhile JIII had a job of his own and unfortunately told us that he won't be able to help on this project anymore.

That means we need a new CG Supervisor and of course some new CG people. We need modelers, texture makers, character animators, matte painters. Actually we need all the help we can get and in short notice.

You can see a few scenes from the movie here (these frames are not color corrected, they are just captured from the camera):

Hi everybody,

We started on keying and erasing some unwanted details from the scenes. But meanwhile we still need help on everything CG. I am sending you a composited shot from the movie and it's uncomposited one. Since we don't have anything CG right now, I used our concept art for the city as the background. So it's temporary. But you can get the color and the mood of the movie.

Hey everybody,

We are in urgent search of a Matte Painter.

We have created the rest of the set as cg, and started compositing the shots. Textures will be ready in a few days but right now cg roof doesn't have any proper texture and lighting. Also our matte painter made some examples and we used them on these composites. But we can't reach him for some time so it looks like we will need a new matte painter.

I am sending you these examples on composites. There will be our flying police vehicle added into that last one and that light will be coming from it.

Hi everyone. We need someone with a very good knowledge of particle modeling and animation. Is there anyone that can help us? There are two scenes. One is where our creature spits out some flower pollens and the other one is in the scene where she throws a little bag and there comes out some seeds that goes into the police vehicle's motor.

By the way, thanks to Kutkin's great matte painting work, here is a composited shot from the movie (with only a few things missing):

hmmm...I love what you are doing with the cockpit, and widescreen rules...if you stay with wide format, you might want to go with a closeup shot to avoid some issues.
It looked like you had a hint of reflection in that first 4:3 shot and that made it sell better. The canopy perspective and interior glass reflections need help in this shot.
Still great work.

Kutkin
01-13-2007, 08:48 AM
Thanks for the comments:)

You are right. I needed to extend that reflection pass and I made it very quickly and loosly.

In the final I think it won't be that wide. I think about half the way between the wide screen and the non-wide screen image.

The shot looks nice!
It needs to be more contrasted, but I think it's mainly because of the codec.

Does it look better cropped like this?

softdistortion
01-14-2007, 09:38 PM
It looks like this is going to be a tense shot? Just guessing form the look on his face...a really wide shot looks nice, but will loose some tension imo.

Also, by cropping even more and you have lots of room off frame to add essential camera vibration/shake/jolts.

madcan
01-15-2007, 07:13 AM
Hi softdistortion,

Thanks for crits, they are always welcome and you were right actually. There are four shots of the pilot. They are here (and corrected as Kutkin suggested):
1 (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/cg/efegorusalanimda_large.mov)
2 (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/cg/efebune_large.mov)
3 (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/cg/efepolen2_large.mov)
4 (http://www.babun.org/hakimiyet/cg/efeirtifakaybediyor_large.mov)

So in second shot, he sees something strange and it must be a tighter shot, you are absolutely right. I will re-render it with a tighter frame. I am just not sure about fourth, in it the vehicle is going down but I think it can be a wider shot. I think I will decide on that after it's before and after shots are done and edited.

Thanks again.

It feels like the grain is too high on the live action elements. It's important to add some grain/depth/blur to get the elements to work together but if you think about a photograph there is usually more grain in the distance with less in the foreground. It seems to be a bit un-natural with the extreme grain in the foreground, and less in the BG.

Just my thoughts,

It looks good,

-J3

JIII
01-29-2007, 08:14 PM
Also, consider the source of your lighting. The live action figures are lit primarially from one direction, almost as if by moonlight. The city is very bright, and almost uniformly surrounding the figures. I think that if a rimlight could be simulated on the figures, or the lights of the city brought down it would be good. THink about a big big city like New York, it's never that dark on the top of buildings because of the insane lights of the city, and the bounce off the clouds.

Think about your lighting dude, but it does look good.

Kutkin
01-30-2007, 03:48 PM
Hi John!
Thanks for your feedback.
The foreground is of very poor quality and I didn't want to spoil also the rest of the image by all the grain.
The foreground is just for getting the idea. There is supposed to be different foreground with different lighting and I suppose there is some lightsource on the left. I can assure you that there will be a lightwrap arround the foreground - Alican has already showed me some compositing tests and it looks nice.
