Yes, that's the very first thing that ran through my mind as well when I saw El Rafo's excellent rendering. I'd say you're in good company to invoke such a complimentary comparison

Hi raphael,
great work as usual :)
What's the part of 3D and 2D in your pictures? I mean by watching the closups, I guess that trees and monks are 2D stuffs, rocks maybe 3D base + retouchs and architecture 3D.Maybe I'm completly wrong. Anyway that's a stunning piece with its own mood.

cheers,
Olivier.

Brilliant piece !!
I like how the mood ties up with the details in this picture.
Nice design of the ancient temple, arches, ruins and the little detailed
figures. Really nice subtle lighting, just right so as to give a certain feeling
but not overexpose. 5 stars from me !

Rafael...

You rock man!
This is great, I love the way compose your scenes and the level of detail you apply, not exagerated, not too clean, always balanced and always depicting "the mood", so we can immerse on your artwork´s world.

Keep going ! 5 Stars !

Raphael-Lacoste
01-24-2006, 01:07 PM
Thanks All for the positive feedback, I think I'm gonna do more 2D now :)

Reiv & Yebah There is Sure a 3D base, I use it for composition and realistic Base for perspective and textures, I used also photos for the shapes of the trees and then painted over and over to get only the 2D feeling (highlights, bounce, details etc...)
this is way faster than 3D, also for the silhoutte, break the lines etc...

here is and example:

this might have been a scene taken from a french movie like "La Pacte des Loups" or "Les Rivières Pourpres" ... both espescially atmospheric movies about a secret order of monks , living in an old monastary, doing some illegal and occult stuff ...

very nice image !!
just in a few hours you say ?

I've been gazing at your image for quite some time, studying it.....drinking it in. The ambiance, depth and incredible sense of mood exude a powerful sense of presence. I find myself wanting to peer around the trees and rocks to see what lies beyond. I want to know the secrets contained therein.

If Katie P. (Kha'tie to Uru fans) still works at Ubisoft, please tell her I said hello.
