I'm having this really wierd problem today. Working on max and suddenly every second time or so when I go to render - it renders as facets. The thing is, my material doesn't have the facets checkbox ticked. (It's the most basic material too - the standard one with a different colour).

I've tried changing the viewport display settings, but obviously this doesn't fix the problem. Max seems to change from smooth to facets more often if I zoom around the shot and then hit render. The only thing that seems to work is changing the rendered from the default scanline to mental ray - however, I don't want to use the mental ray renderer.

Any one have any ideas on why this might be happening?

Thanks

Oh, btw - it's max 7.5

Well... ...do you see those facets in the viewport itself?

I would try to put a "Smooth" on it.

Yeah...but it's really weird how it's doing it. It has a turbosmooth modifier on it so I don't think that would be the problem (should have mentioned it before - sorry). It'll look fine in the viewport, but when I render it - it will show up as facets. Then, when I close the render window it will show up as facets in the viewport.

To get rid of it I basically need to render it again at which point it will show up as normal (smooth) in the render window. Then when I close that window, it returns to normal in the viewport.

It's a really annoying cycle - and I have no idea why it's happening. It's not a new scene or anything - just started happening today when I was working on it - this is before I did anything to the objects, modifiers or materials.

Thanks for the reply though.
