View Full Version : The Aristocrat: A new character
keetmun 01-23-2006, 01:55 AM Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted here again.
Been working on a really important project, and we're 5 weeks from completion, but I got bored over the weekend and decided to dabble with an idea for a character I had in my head. And since I'm gonna have a bit of fun with this character I thought I might as well share it with you guys
This one's called 'The Aristocrat'! :bounce:

wire:

just started on the head, but i have some problems with the wire already, especially at the forehead as you can see. I'm going for rather alien-like proportions, I'll post some concept sketches when I have something more concrete!
Cheers guys

I dont think the forehead has any problems.
I think the outer side of the brow has a problem.
You need to rearange the loops to get rid of those three poles.
or at least two of them.
Other then that just reshaping the mesh would make it look natural.
Good luck on your project.

MagicRubber - Hey thanks dude, I think I got what you mean, fixed!
Spent some time during Chinese New Year to work on this, here's the outcome. Thanks in advance for the critiques friends!:buttrock:

I still have yet to refine the details, especially the back, but at least I got the base shape down. Will spend more time on it once I get the chance.
Just so you know I have a habit of working on the eyes last, because I kind of like to think that your model comes to life once the eyes are done. Yeah cheesy I know...:scream:
Also I know the ears are kinda wrong, but I'll refine them last since they won't be seen that much
The smooth shaded wires were done using SuperSteve3d's maxscript. Download it here (http://www.stevelim.com/).
Cheers guys!

Nice work, i like the elongated style your going for. Looks like a cool night elf type char now, would love to see what you have planed to make her an Aristocrat looking char.
Would suggest tho, that if you really need a copywrite on your images, tuck them down in a bottom corner or something, kinda distracts from viewing the image.
Keep up the good work mate.

Bapsis - Haha thanks dude, will move the watermarks away next round. Yup I've got something in mind for the aristocratic look, but I gotta do more research first. Thanks again!
Glen Gramling - Yup will do, till next round!
Thanks guys! I'll be back with more stuff in the next few weeks hopefully.
Cheers

Hi guys, back with another update. I'll finish up the arms before making refinements (I plan to do to the upper legs only). Did some preliminary tests with mentalray SSS, and I think it's a decent start, though it's not a complex shader yet. Please do critique the shader, I have so much to learn.
Thanks mates!

This is my first time modelling jewels, and probably my last! Still doesn't look really aristocratic enough. Help!:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Maybe try adjusting the front upper half of the spirals so they won't appear to get in the way of head movement as much? Right now it looks a bit restrictive, if they flourish out more that might give it a more showy/aristrocratic look.

TimonQ - Cool, will try that now, thanks! :buttrock:

yo,
I think that your model is looking good. I feel that the neck choker is a bit too busy right now. If you could make it shorter at the back, you may be able to add more bling in the form of earrings without them being distracted by the long black lines at the back of her neck.
I don't know, maybe you could try shaping a necklace out of the jewels at her neck to hang down to just above her chest area.
Aside from that, I think once you put on the makeup and the hair and the rest of the accessories like the bracelets or rings or hairpieces or whatnots, you'll have it.
I think Audrey Hepburn is a good example of how to look "aristocratic", especially in her breakfast at tiffany's picture. God Bless her :)
Cheers,
Terence

Lamster - Thanks man, i looked through the Audrey Hepburn pics u suggested, and she does look aristocratic. However I'm trying to go for a Victorian influenced look. Redesigning the accessory now! :arteest: :buttrock:
PS - Are u from NYP? Or what part of the industry u working in?

Alrighty after a whole sunday mulling over the jewellery designs, with the feedback from here and my friends, i've decided on this simpler design. Not as showy as the last one, but i think it works better! Shaders are not final. Thanks for the help :buttrock: Now I'm going to start on the textures and then the hair. Will probably do opacity maps, cos I really want to work on my texturing.

Hey all,
Been working on the textures for a few days now. Been looking at Reiv's texturing process very closely, trying to get the same results. Here's what I got:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/keetmun/Aristocrat3D/wip18.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/keetmun/Aristocrat3D/wip20.jpg
A different view for a change....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/keetmun/Aristocrat3D/wip21.jpg
A look at my colour texture.....
Adjusted the eyes from the previous post, to make them less arched.
I'm using 3ds max with mentalray. Fast skin for the shader
I'm pretty much still stuck at the eyebrows now. Realised I made the area above the eye sockets a bit too large... so the brows look really small.... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
I'll see if I can adjust that area of the mesh with morphers. Hopefully it works out!
Cheers guys

Here's an update on her face. Finally got some hair on her head, plus eyelashes, proper eyes etc. I've basically followed Reiv's process thus far. Will refine her eyes further.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/keetmun/Aristocrat3D/wip26_wip.jpg
I'm now working on her clothes textures. Will then procedd to light and comp her on a proper bg. Hopefully I can be done by monday latest..... Gotta rush for my graduation show, which is only 4 weeks from now... :banghead:
All c&c very welcome as usual!
Cheers

looks great. It turned out to be more cartoonish then the first wip images, but that aint a bad thing.
I've basically followed Reiv's process thus far.
is that a tutorial. U have a link to that, would love to have a look at it.
Keep it up !

woutb - damn it look cartoonish! :banghead: Could be bacause of my default light setup though, maybe after i light it properly it will turn out better!
It's not really a tutorial, more of a wip that i reference a lot - Reiv's Pink Sugar WIP (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=268961&page=1&pp=15&highlight=inae)
Check it out it's really good, but that's saying the obvious when it comes to Olivier's work!
Cheers mate

helllo man...well sking is looking cool..the sss effect looks fine, i think that u can try to paint a bit darker the cavities on the skin..u know ears folds and around the eyes...skin sometimes turns darker in some areas...that will add some more voume i think..but i like the result a lot...

Dont know if its been brought up but with the ears it looks like you have just got a basic ear model and stretched the outter edges to get the points, the majority of the ear model is still quite visable, try blending the ear with the overall shape :)
Looks good nice modeling, very clean. :)

rattlesnake - hey mate! yeah i agree i could improve the skin even more, will do that for next update, thanks man! :bounce:
dARCKLOWN - I was afraid somebody would bring that up haha! Indeed u are right about the ears. Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution for the ears, but I'l try my best! Thanks for pointing it out! :D
I'm now wrapping up on the clothes and environments, and will try to squeeze in all the refinements I can, especialy the skin. Will be back soon!
Cheers mates

Here's a shaded view render, with a slightly older lighting setup:

Thanks to all the mates out there who helped with the feedback! I'll now post this in the finished forum. I might add some screens of my lights setup etc later on.
Cheers mates, and thanks!

wooooo nice.=o
Maybe u can try adding veins(?) to the eye and also make the reflection in the eye softer?
Cause the environment isn't very bright.
well,this is just my opinion.=x
love the way you do the hair.
Did you use peltmapping for the clothes?
it's really nice.@_@
i'm leaving further and further away from you liao.:S

newbie1985 - oh ya man, thanks for the feedback, unfortunately I'm pretty much done with this character already, gonna move on to my next one now.
Hmm for the clothes i did the usual unwrapping and texturing methods. Have no idea what's peltmapping haha!
Damn need u remind me of FUSION... :scream: U keep going as well!
Vadonia - Thank you very much! Unfortunately she's done already, u can see her on the finished gallery, probably way back in the pages now...
