Ive just bought the Sunday Mail (UK) and there was a lovely TTT booklet inside. Mostly nothing new but there was this photo of the model that they scanned in to get CGI Gollum.

Pretty cool I think.

not sure if thats a valid comparrison. since jar jar is a few years old. comparing him to yoda would be a bit better. or some of the creature work in harry potter.

after watching episode II on DVD...

Yoda looks so 3Dishhhh.... I believe JarJar, Boss Nass and watto were more realist than Yoda...

(maybe it's just my bad memory...)

i was talking about everything:) from the look...to animation...to rendering. for some reason i didnt find yoda all too realistically rendered.:/ nor jar jar.

Iīm really enjoying all the small tidbits of information on the TTT CGI, until now.

Gollum, specially, looks very promising, with translucent skin at some thin areas (like the ears, and the tip of the nose). If thatīs as good as it seems, itīs way ahead of anything by ILM .

Anybody knows if our friends at WETA are using subsurface scattering (or something like that), or if theyīre simulating it with
painted ambience/translucence (like in Shrek) ?

December will be a looong month...

Donno, the Dobby character ILM did in the newest harry potter movie was pretty amazing.

Yeah, sorry, I forgot Dobby. Itīs a great character, of course.

But, I donīt know - in FOTR, when they showed Gollumīs eyes, they were absolutely real (and scary...). Also, the Treebeard images that are circulating over the Web are very , very impressive.

Weīll have to wait, and see. ;)

Interestingly, according to the extended edition of FOTR, the Gollum we saw in that film was pretty much a prototype, and the one we'll see in TTT is more refined.

You know, I saw Harry Potter with my kid brother the other day, and I was IMPRESSED with the cg elf or whatever it was. I thought you guys would be going crazy about it! It's the most realistic cg char I've seen to date. Was it all CG?

I don't know why but in Star Wars, both Yoda and Jar Jar look very fake, they just don't look "real", they don't look like they're "there". Particularly in the Yoda "fight scene", that was just stupid.

But that elf in Harry Potter... whew! Amazing.

I hope that The Two Towers impresses me even more than Harry Potter (Happened once already - the Harry Potter troll impressed me a lot, and then I saw the Lord of the Rings' troll... WOW! :D )

Who wants to make a bet..? I bet that all the shots of Gollum in Twin towers will be in caves and very low light.

Sinse that is gollum's thing..is living in a cave....so it makes it alot easier to be photoreal when you have alot of shadow....as appose to say Yoda, or the star wars characters...which were in broad daylight.....making it ten times harder when you can't hide things . :D

Umm, did you read the books? If so, I guess you forgot about those chapters where Gollum runs around with Frodo and Sam?

well theres one detail that woul dmake you think about the running around. since they do mostly travel by night. and in the day they sleep/while hiding in shadows.

i dont know if yoda looked fake but i loved his animation... It reminded me of an old comic that had some hopping beans.. really funny... Anyway... Dobby is perfect... Gollum rulezzz.... But what do you need realism when you have style... Scratt form Ice Age is THE top cg character ever....

Well if Jason is going to bet you Ckerr812 then I think I might be safe too as well! About one million bucks I would say... actually it's only money, make it one billion!

Well that's one bet I wouldn't mind losing...:)

At least they won't pull a godzilla, (where it just so happens) that everytime a CG character appears it's always dark and rainy...before 2000 I don't think Photoreal CG characters where aloud to come out in sunlight, (I don't think they had CG suntan lotion)..hehe

Can't wait to see the movie :)

I'll bet ya.. in fact hand over the money. ;) Haven't you watched the Two Towers trailer? Theres a shot of Gollum on a chain leading Frodo and Sam in brod day light, and i'm sure thats just a taste... so much for hiding in the shadows. :D And I don't think WETA is gonna try and hide anything, the cg/minature use in LOTR was friggin amazing way better then any of the over done eye candy ILM has been pumping out.. Even on the special features dvd of Episode II they talked so much about "the number of shots they were doing", and how they pumped out x number of shots in a week, but wheres the quality!?!? Will see how ILM does with The Hulk.
Just my 2 cents..
