could someone tell me how i specifiy an edge as being "hard" i am working on a sword and the hilt has some hard adges on it, but ms keeps smoothing them over. any info is appreciated. thanks

in the meshsmooth modifier activate sub-object edge. Select the edges you want to be hard and increase the crease amount.

try apply smoothing groups on polys before meshsmooth, and cross out the "smoothing groups" in the meshsmooth rollout.
this way U get really sharp edge.

Or what I prefer to do is chamfer the edges you want hard. Having two visable edges very close to each other cause a sharp and nicely beveled edge in NURMS mode. I use it all the time lot when I build and object with soft and hard edges.
