View Full Version : shag:hair + max 5 = TOTAL LAMENESS??
megaflaizer 12-01-2002, 05:48 AM ok, im using shag hair and max 5. im making a grass scene using the shag hair.
the problem is, when i add a certain light [skylight] and the light tracer, the file crashes at the end of the render. after that, even if i remove the light and the light tracer solution, the files still crashes after that.
wtf!! is anyone else getting this kind of instability with shag hair and max 5...? is there a new compile im missing? ive been wrangling withh this for 2 days, im getting really frustrated...

why would you use Light Tracer and shag hair? Thats suicide. :-) Same with using Ink & Paint with Shag. Anyways, try using free vray to do some global illumination. I tried it with shag hair and doesn't crash, while still calculating GI.
Good Luck.
[edit] also, vray gi is much faster. :-)

which is the lameass "protection" scheme. i find that if i restart the pserv process and re-register using digip_register.bat that the file will work again [as long as i remove GI]
but it also seems to be certain textures that 'infect' the file.
grrr... im just gonna do the grass as a comp layer in combustion.
im really getting sick of the max instability thing. is maya any better [stability wise]

heh heh, you know every time max acts up I keep thinking to myself "I bet Maya doesn't do this $#!t". :-) All those little but annoying bugs in Max start to get to me as well.
you're right harmonic, now all i do with max have 95% chances to crash at any moment i'm trying to learn maya but it seems that it take more time to do a scene on maya than on max, perhaps cause i don't know all shortcuts in maya !
do you think so ?

In my experience, fur is nasty to use on all platforms. Big production houses usually have fur TD's who's main task on a project is to get fur to render, and also look good. Workis out great sometimes (Monsters Inc) and other times no so (Walking with beasts). Still, its a hard thing to do well, so cut it some slack.
As for Maya, you only get fur in Unlimited if I remembder, and having used it, yes its as shit if not worse than Shag. Dynamics in it are useless, and it freakes out on %50 of rendered frames (missing shadows, missing fur, missing emmiters etc etc). Also I'm on a project now that uses MTOR and PRman fur, and that also has its issues. Stick at it with Shag, and good luck.
p.s. Fur + GI is best left for now, its still a bit bleeding edge....
