Maxman was a very good product, but I don't think it has been updated for years.

renderman for 3dsmax would be sweet, imagine the power of the reyes architecture, principaly its speed, in 3ds max enviroment, sss, DOF , motion blur and FATSSSSSSSSS

What's wrong with mental ray? max's integration is not bad and i doubt Renderman would be faster at SSS for example...

Maybe, but when it comes to Motionblur, no renderer can mess with "XXX"(render)-Man - the speed is amazing...

I'm sure the licensing would be the same/similar to what they have done with mental ray.
We are a small group, only 3 here. We can't afford mental ray, but we have been able to purchase a render farm so we had to go with vray. It's either that or standard scanline render...lol.
licenses that cost that much are horrible for small companies. In my case it's a huge company with a little teeny lab for animations and renderings. Most of the designers do their own basic renderings. Unfortunately we haven't found who to talk to about the cost effectiveness of our work, and the high demand for it.
-sorry, went off on a tangent there.

Assuiming you are using Max8 (and if not well worth the upgrade if you have a renderfarm), you can use as many machines as you want with Mental Ray through Backburner. The only limitation is when you are using Distributed Bucket Rendering, and then you are limited to 8 cpu's (still pretty generous).
Network rendering with the mental ray Renderer
The mental ray renderer supports network rendering via Backburner and the command line. The steps for setting up and submitting jobs are exactly the same as those you'd use for the scanline renderer. No additional licensing or fees are necessary.

First and foremost renderman is not a renderer, it is a standard. The most famous implementation of renderman is PRman (Photorealistic Renderman made by Pixar). The only time I know of Pixar using 3dsmax was for digimattes for the Incredibles where they used Brazil to do the rendering, yes the makers of PRman used another renderer in production. Since Max is not the main tool of use at Pixar I highly doubt that you will see a max port done by them. As others have posted there are other converters and other Renderman compatible renderers beyond PRman. A list of converters/translators and compatible renderers can be found here (http://www.dotcsw.com/links.html).
Hope this helps,
-Eric

PRman (Renderman) isn't all that it's cracked up to be, especially for small shops with only a handful of artists. Also, the REYES architecture really only excels at a few things, but with the common need of raytracing these days (unlike 8 years ago or so), it totally blows. You can't just bolt a ray server onto a REYES renderer and expect efficiency. Sure, in pure scanline mode, PRman is hard to beat. It crunches through geometry like it's no one's business, it can also temporally sample and jitter efficiently so you get fast motion blur. But making shaders isn't trivial and unless you're writing custom shaders, you're not fully exploiting the capabilities of PRman.
So, unless you're a larger shop with PRman TDs and shader folks, it isn't going to have much advantage over other renderers.

i think tha max is pretty good currently 'out of the box' for rendering...
i just want the vecta based renderer for flash/toon/ai to be ported from maya over to max in verions 9...!
ohh an maybe a hardware renderer too from maya over to max...please!
vray is cool
brazil is cool
final render looks good too
renderman would be nice of course!

renderman(pixar) is fast, and we dont need raytracing for all the scene that the problem with th e3ds max renders all of them are fully raytrece renderer, we dont need that for all the frame beautifuly things can be doine without raytrace
