Title: On That Fateful Night
Name: Jarkko Nääs
Country: Finland
Software: Painter

Dwarves have been my favourite drawing subjects in the field of classic fantasy.. so here's a dwarven smith.

What I tried to accomplish with the pic:

1: The atmosphere of a very cold winter night.

2: The feeling of having finally gotten your day's work finished and taking a quiet break before heading back home to sleep.

3: The transition from a hot place to a cold place.

All critique will be appreciated. :)

Yep I like this :) It rides a line between a dwarf and an old-time Santa and does create the feeling your going for.

Not really sure why hed pull his tools out with him but its not really important. It does re-enforce the hot-cold feeling. Also a very hot fire like he has going would probably melt a large part of the snow on the roof around the chimney, but thats also very unimportant in this case.

Good work

Hoho! I love it!!! The fantastical feeling is great and the house looks like a warm place for that dwarf to go into... ;)

Is that Finrim the Unfortunate when he retires from trollslaying? :D
Beautiful as always and because it's -30 celsius here atm, I totally can relate to this ;)

Plastik892: He's brought the hot blade with him and thrusted it in the snow to cool it down.. that's why he has his tools with him. Good point about the roof, gotta consider that.. :)

alexfalchi: Thanks. :)

thomasW: Thanks. :) Yeah, I imagine his wife is waiting there, inside the house.

ElFuego: Yeah, It's Finrim after he's begun pursuing his runesmith career.

Ikaa: Glad you like the mood, that's what's most important for me in a pic.

You accomplished the three of your porpuses! I really can feel the winter and the cold. And you can even tell a story from this illustration...

Well, you painted what you know very good - winter... ;) And you do it very good, i like it. How is the temperature on you now? In Warsaw we have today -18 :) but at last night was -26.

Great mood! I really like it. A little low in detail maybe, but sometimes the image just loses intensity if you detail it too much.

Simple yet profound. But I have 2 cents for you...which I hope you don't mind...and since no one is making any comment on this as of yet:

*It's not fitting the title for me. You're giving me suspense when I first glance at your title:
"On That Fateful Night"...but when I scroll down to see your work...it's calm and...what's happening to make it so "fateful". I think you need to add something to it to fit the title...such as his house is about the burn or catch fire...or something of the sort.

*I see your piece would look great with a hint of more detail to the snow and water ... since it's closest to us. Not that you didn't emphasize detail to it...but to me...it needs to be more defined.

But that's my humble 2 cents and...what I said above is just my taste. I give you four stars anyway. ;)

First:
It's fateful night. The blacksmith finished his work on this time. Use imagination what's can be. Can be anything. Sword, knife, chain...
Second:
More details. Are you looking anytime on froozy, dark night? When your eyes are full of tears? Then aren't details :)

MayYeo: Thanks. Yes, the title suggests some kind of story too.. Something's about to happen, but I didn't have anything more specific in mind.

Kal Torak: Thanks. Yeah, the weather ceratinly helped me with creating that atmosphere. It was -28 degrees a couple of days ago, but now "only" -15.

ElKrullo: yeah, it could have been more detailed, but I sort of decided to leave the foreground mostly undetailed to focus the attention to the dwarf, the smithy and the smouldering blade. It works to some degree, I think.. but might still need some fine tuning and polishing maybe.

Abyssis: Thanks. I guess it has a certain Northern touch to it.. in addition to the regular fantasy feel. ;)

MichaelMotion: Thanks.

Darkskills: Thanks.

Vaheednasir: Thanks.

Loulu79: In a way you have a point.. the original sketch was larger, and it had some shadowy figures riding along the road, but I cropped them off to improve the composition. After that I still kept on drawing the rest of the pic according to the original mood. Some hints remain. The finished sword blade, the smith looking into the darkness, the "almost too quiet" -feeling, the full moon. But yeah.. maybe the title is a bit too much as it is. Thanks for commenting about the amount of details. I agree, the foreground could be better.
