cant remember what that looks like but im assuming u mean like a lightbeam...
make a spot light, turn on shadow casting set to shadow map
goto enviroment, add an effect, volume light, select the light u just made and render...now make a shape for it to shine through

I have tried that, but i want it to look more like sunrays or something shines through the letters, not like fog...
Come on.. Someone has to know how to do this, please?

I have tried to make that effect several times in max and it has proven to be difficult and it real doesnt come out right.
If you can get your hands on the Shine filter for After Effects that will do the exact effect that you are looking for.
I know its not Max but I hope this helps.

try volumetric lights and caustics
try putting a gel on your light and playing with post effects

what you wanna do is make a cut out on a plane of your text, use volumetric lights and make sure shadow is turned on. adjust results till you get what you want.
Oh yeah, of course make the cutout non renderable. should still give the effect. if not you can try screening it to the background so it blends in and set the light source to exclude illumination of it.
