View Full Version : a non-moving fluid stirred up by a piece of geo... how?

Hey guys and gals,

In Maya 4.5, does anyone know how to fill a container with a fluid half way (this I do know...) and then have it REMAIN STILL until disturbed by an object that is set to collide?

The effect I'm going for is like an object dropped into a box of talcum powder, with the dust kicking up and then falling back onto the object. I'll have to play with the shader on the collide object to make the dust look right, but how do I set up the fluid so that is remains still until the impact starts? Just moving the start frame won't work, as the fluid starts to move all over once the sim starts, and I need a movement from the point of impact outward.

Suggestions??

You have to turn almost everything to static to get the fluid to hardly move. I tried to get it to be still and you really don't have any luck. Another stupid thing about fluids reacting with geometry is that there are no sub-frame calculations (although for obvious reasons). I tried to have a spehere skim the top of a fluid in a very tall container just to see what would happen. I ended up getting 5 divits in the fluid which were the 5 frames that the sphere was inside. I'll wait to see what they'll improve in the next version:hmm:

Actually, I was able to totally freeze the movement of the fluid without moving the start frame. If you play with the gravity or the viscosity (key it up or down when you need to) you can get the fluid to be totally still or even change direction when you want to. By animating the gravity and viscosity settings, I was able to roughly get the effect I described within a few minutes. I'll really have to play around a bit more to hit it exactly, but I'm in the ballpark now.

Any interest from anyone in my posting a sample file when I get closer to the solution?
