After not doing hardly any digital painting last year I wanted to start getting busy this year. After some warm ups I started this guy to be my 1st finished piece of 2006... it's a concept for a character in a story I'm trying to do. This guy is the Aragorn or Captain America of the story ... so keep that in mind if you have any crits... does he look like a leader, does he look like a lead character? thanks for any comments and any art crits too ;)

Yes you will need a wacom ;) I guess it's possible with a mouse but that would suck to try.

Great character and clothes. The contrast and definition of the eyes gets alittle diluted on the one with the background added. Particularly the right eye the dark rim around the iris has disappeared. The figure just looked fresher in posting #6. Really nice job so far.

My initial thoughts on seeing this is that he looks greatly rendered and drawn. Like a leader.. but not good imho. Seems like a bad guy, or at least a kinda shifty guy somehow.. could be the narrow eyes, combined with the tight lips.
Anyways just a thought from the world of classic comics, the evil guys usually had more narrow eyes, and sharp features ;D

Thanks for the comments... I'm still tweaking along and considering all that is said. I worked on the eyes more here and the hair.

hi - nice progression! my suggestion: you could try and invest some more colour and value variation in the skin to bring out the tone and lighting - basically it's a bit flat as it is. Also, er the beard looks a little bit 'drawn on'. Maybe some more variation of the value would help to give it form?

I agree - shorter lighter strokes in layers should do the trick...well...according to whether you want a beard or just 5 o'clock shadow. Do it like the man in your avatar! He's got great stubble!

Yay for messy gritty stubble!

He's looking very much like Boromir/Sean Bean. Or at least it looks like he's got his hair and clothes...and that suspicious gleam in his eye... "Just biding my time, Frodo. Just biding my time..."

Thanks for the comments... I'll get on making the skin and stubble looking better.
