View Full Version : Offset input device to trace image

Can you offset your input device (be it tablet or mouse) to allow you to trace / paint over an image so you can see both what you are painting on it's own and the original image on its own?
Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

if i understand you, you may:
- open the image in painter
- create a new layer
- fill that layer with canvas colour (white, for example)
- and draw/paint as you wish
so, you can paint and set the opacity of that layer so you can see the image below
is that what you are asking about?
Are you familiar with the cloning feature and cloning brushese in Painter? You will see both the original and the cloned version, with a "crosshair" marking your current brush position in the original. Is this what you mean?

Open your original image.
Use File > Clone.
Use Ctrl/Command+A to select the entire Clone Canvas then use Ctrl/Command+X to clear the image leaving a blank white Canvas.
Use Ctrl/Command+T to turn on Tracing Paper (toggles it on and off) and see a 50% opacity view of your original image.
Arrange both the original image and Clone on your screen so you can see both if you feel you need to see both in addition to seeing the 50% opacity view of the original on the Clone.
With the Clone active, create a new Layer and begin tracing. The reason for creating a new Layer is that you'll have more flexibility if you want to paint color later on, on either the Canvas or other Layers dragged down the Layers palette list below the line work Layer.
When you save the Clone (tracing), then open it again to continue working, be sure to also open the original image. Then, in the File > Clone Source flyout menu, check the original image's file name. This tells Painter to continue allowing you to Clone paint and/or turn on Tracing Paper to see the original image at 50% opacity while you're tracing.
