try using pyrocloster (or stormtracer) instead of the current geometry. You can use geometry, but enable motion blur and it will already look allot better ;)

To get realistic explosions I think the best way is compositing them over. http://www.artbeats.com/ has a lot of explosion vidoes for this purpose. They are not exactly cheap but they've got low resolution preview footage that you can download and experiment with.
For doing it in 3d I'd say Pyrocluster or Stormtracer too. But you can also get something good out of animated visible lights with noise in the visibility. (Animated values of visible lights will be projected on the lifetime of a particle. So if you animate it to have a red color at frame zero it will have the red color when the particle is born.)

I did this about 4 years ago. It renders a bit slow but should get you the idea of how to use visible lights.
