logo29a 01-19-2006, 07:48 PM This is my first real digital painting. So far, it has been done only in Painter IX. I just finished blocking in color and smoothing. Next I'll start working on the details such as the eye, fur, etc. Let me know what you think. Be as critical as you want to be. I am still learning.

Here's a bit more. I've worked on the eye and added a bit of fur. All that's really left is to finish the fur highlights and add whiskers.

Thanks. Here's the final. Any critiques?

I'm missing the background. Even fuzzy suggestions of a room would be nicer than one solid color. I can tell he's looking intently out a window, but it's like everything around him has been erased or censored. Even just a wooden texture would help I think.

I understand. This was just an excercise taken from a photograph. In the photograph the background consisted purely of an eggshell colored wall, lit by the setting sun through a window. I also feel that a non-distracting background brought more focus to the subject. Perhaps I could add a egg-shell textured gradient. Would that help?

I agree with Vizon. There should be some kind of a background - even if only some kind of texture.
You came this far and it looks really good, but I think you are able to do even better. You should work a little more on the furry effect and introduce other colors than just plain black, grey and white.
Anyway, nice picture of a dog

Yeah I think it would. When you're done, if you find that the eggshell texture is too bright or distracting, try another version with a darker texture. One of the nicest things about digital painting is that you can create many versions of the same picture, experiment in all kinds of ways without "messing up" your picture, and then there's always the "undo" button if you don't like something you did (my personal favorite).

Thanks for all of the input guys. I'll keep working and hope to have some new ideas by tomorrow.
