Is this any good? I've been looking for a mental ray book for sometime, but didn't know which one to go for.

Depends on what you're looking to learn. A pretty large chunk of the book focuses on the MI syntax. If you currently are or are planning on being a rendering/shading TD, or are writing your own plugin for using Mental Ray in another application, then it's great. Otherwise, you'll probably never need to know about it. A lot of the rest of it explains a lot of what goes on under the hood. IE, what is eliptical filtering and why does it give better results, what are the differences between the base illumination models and what are their basic parameters, and so on. Again, great resource for rendering/shading TDs, but not too useful to the rest.
