Hi there,

Well, thought I'd post some images of this model I have been working on lately. Modeled in Lightwave3D. The model itself is still incomplete, like the cockpit interior, and underneath the wings, but, I got a little keen to get started on the texturing. So far, just the bump maps and colour.

Anyway, I would appreciate anybody's comments, crits, etc.

Cheers
Evan

Oh, here's a better view of the aircraft

I love P40, and I can say this one is pretty accurate.
But my favorite, is P40 C, the tomahawk

OMG. I love it! Do you have a low- and high-poly wire for us?

evan

Thankyou all.

Yes, the P40 tomahawk's are a very nice aircraft, but I think I still prefer the P40E to N, especially the variants with the extended fuselarge.

Wireframe has a high count, as I will be using this for some still, high res. renders as well as animations. Anyway, here it is.

Great looking model... I want it!

The only criticism I can give is the holes in the prop spinner. The P-40 had a vairable-pitch prop, didn't it? If so, wouldn't the holes in the spinner be more round to allow movement of the blades?

Cinema1954, YOU CANT HAVE IT! :-)

Seriously though, you stumped me on that question (variable prop. pitch), I'm not sure, but here's a pic of a real P40N, which, in my opinion, looks fairly snug.

And thankyou for the compliment, I appreciate it.

thx very much evan :)

mm.com is a spin off from scifi-meshes.com a rather large site on the net mostly concentrate on science fiction as the name says :)
some of us got more and more interested in creating military 3d art and surrected military-meshes.com . i really like how far the members have already gotten with their modelling skills :) hell even me started to model something ;)

the new main site will launch soon i guess, i am in the final stages of that design and it will surely rock i hope ;)

cheers

Jeffo - Cool, the Spitfires are my favourite aircraft. Post some pics when you have something to show. Which Mk. are you modeling?

Hello!

First of all... your model is AWESOME!!!!

Could you tell as what progz did you used to model this plane?

If it was 3D max, could you tell us what was the main modeling method? spline+surface mod or patch modeling or mayby other?

I ask because i'm modeling plane too, P51a Mustang, but my model looks a bit SHITY compared to Yours ;-)

OK... keep up an exellent job! :applause: :applause: :applause:

p.s. where can i find detailed views of the planes.. you know... front view, side view, top, bottom ;-) is there any good internet site with this stuff? (especially i'm looking for P51A views)

That's one great model, Evan! I like it a lot :)
The wingtips in the wireframe look kinda odd... what technique are you using?
Only thing that stands out is the tail section. Tailplanes look rather thin and the whole area a bit 'skinny'/flimsy.

Textures are looking promising too. Could you pleeeeeze make a Dutch variant of it too? ;) They had nice Olive Drab/Neutral Grey machines about 1944/45 and later all-metal ones. The Dutch flag on it looks very colourful :) Let me know if you need any references on these machines or the P-40N in general. I've got some nice stuff on it.

Skyraider - Hey thanks! . I'll take a look at the tail section to make sure its right. I had some trouble with that section and was'nt 100% happy with it. I did'nt have much in the way of GOOD reference to go by. For the wings & the tips I used spline patching. I'd be glad to hear any suggestion you might have on modeling the wing tips. Also, I would very much appreciate any reference you might have on the P-40N, in particular, colour schemes and blue prints. I originally wanted to do a South Pacific Theatre RAAF P-40N, but did'nt have alot of reference, so I decided to go with the US colour scheme. I'd also be interested in seeing the dutch colour scheme.
Anyway, thankyou, your comments are much appreciated and respected.

Arnet - Thanks for the kind words. Lightwave 3D 7.5 for modeling and rendering.

EighthDecay & Ursus - Thanks. Much appreciated!

Hi Evan,

I scanned you a number of drawings of the P-40N and its cockpit.
P-40N drawings (http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/usa/P-40)
(source: "Curtiss P-40", MBI, Prague 1993)
I'm sure they're helpful :)
Note the main drawing is split up (I don't have an A3 scanner :() and resembles the P-40E, but has scrapviews of the P-40N. Combined with the P-40N drawings you have the complete picture :)

As for the Dutch machines, I left my Dutch aviation books at home in Holland (I am Dutch but live in England) I'm afraid, but I've asked a friend to help me out. But trust me, Dutch P-40s look sweeeet! ;)

PS. The wingtips on my models are integral with the wing. I use patches. Let me know if you want to see a wireframe. There is a small animation here (http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/tutorials/yak-9d.gif) that might help.

nice modelling .. pretty dense mesh though ... but I'll suppose you need that for the detail ..

love to see some animation of this baby ..

Evan, check here!

The friend I mentioned already scanned loads of Dutch P-40s some time ago. Superb stuff, even colour photographs from late war. Your model will look great in these colours! ;)

Wow - there's some nice reference pics there, and thanks alot for the blueprints. I think you have just changed my mind, a dutch P-40N it is going to be then.
Hey, well, I'm half dutch (my mum's dutch, she moved to Aust. just after the war with her family).
Thanks again for the links. Downloading the animation right now.

Subscream - thanks

Cheers

awesome work

if youre gonna use it for realistic renders and animation, rough it up, it looks like it was just built, cleaned, and waxed. and even after that it will still have dirt and maybe some rusting...its a bit of an old plane.

looking great.

Thanks all.

Risibility - dont forget, its still a wip and sofar I have only created the basic colour and bump maps. Diff, spec, etc still to come. But your right, I will be creating some nice "weathering' to the aircraft. Cheers.

Jeffo - I like your Spitfire. It has a very cartoonish look to it. Nice. I'm hoping that was your intention? Yes, more of my updates will be coming.. shortly. Hey, nice characters on your site. Well done!

Thanks everyone.
