View Full Version : Can't run Max8 in OpenGL...crashes
Giant 01-18-2006, 12:31 PM Hello all,
As part of the Autodesk subscriber program, I got my copy of Max8 several months back. However, having installed it, I cannot seem to run Max8 in OpenGL mode. I have to run it in DirectX or the default. I guess I don't have to run in OpenGL, but I would like to know why I am crashing, for peace of mind's sake.
So why am I crashing in OpenGL? As a side note to those who might be able to help, this is the first time I have run Max on an Athlon system. For Max7 I ran on a Pentium. Help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Here are the computer specs: (Velocity Micro)
3 Gigs of PC3200
Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Dual (SLI) nVidia eVEGA 7800GTX
nForce 4 Motherboard
300 Gig SATA HD
SounderBlaster Audigy 2Z
Thank you.

we had the same problem. It was happening in 7.5 though.
All three of our computers suddenly stopped working at the same time.
I used the maxtreme drivers as an alternative at first. I tried downloading new drivers. I tried all the usually things, but nothing seemed to work.
About a week later i tried it again and it just went away.
There are still some huge issues though, like not being able to extrude or move a poly edge.
Hopefully autodes sees that there are ALOT of people with this problem and they fix it.
They told me it was my video card. (even though I told them it happened on 3 different machines with all different models)

Hmm..strange indeed.
Well, I am going to get SP1, which I saw was available. However, it is an .msp file. When I click on it to run it asks me to choose an app. I read the readMe notes and it says to open it with Windows Explorer. That just seems to download it again. I will keep playing with it.
Hopefully someone has a suggestion for the OpenGL question.
EDIT: Downloading using FireFox does not work...downloads the 10meg file fine with IE, however, I still cannot install it. It is asking me to find the application to run it.

You seem to have some problems with your system there..
I downloaded the file using Firefox and all went fine. You should be able to start the instalation just by doubleclicking the file.
Are you using Windows XP SP2? If not, you should..
But I guess you do. Maybe that SLI configuration is causing you some problems with the openGl driver..

Yes. I have Windows SP2 on my computer. That is very strange that it is not executable. It is almost as tho Windows is missing something. I went to Windows Updates and seem to be all up to par.
Even before I setup the SLI config, I was getting this problem.
thanx for trying!
