Is it a way to hide my manipulator?

you cant hide it but you can make it very small so it wont be distracting by hitting ' - ' (minus) key a couple of times.

To enlarge it back just hit ' + ' until you see fit.

Doesn't pressing "q" effectively hide the manipulator?

i think he wants to hide the manipulator while still in move rotate or scale mode.
