Hi, I started drawing just a little while ago and am still horrid with my wacom. I realy want to learn how to paint digitally, though i have never even done hand painting or drawing before. I want to know how some of you guys got started and what I should do first.

Here is one of my attempts at a sketch with the wacom.

Pretty good for a total newbie!

You've NEVER drawn before? How did you come by a wacom?

werd,

There's no reason to be embarrassed ~ a lot of new people post here, all the time. :) It's not to discourage you from keeping this thread that I recommended the Beginner's Lounge. I just recommended it because I think it's something you might enjoy participating in.

Cheers, :)

Paperclip- Thanks, and ya Ive never done anything more than some very poor concepts for my 3D work, I bought the wacom just out of eagerness to learn:bounce: .

Rebecca- Im very happy that you could point out a place where beginners can show their work, its just what ive been looking for. Im not dicouraged at all, jus a little intimidated by some of the amazing artwork on this site:)

looks a hell of alot better than when I first started drawing, hah.
a lil practuce and you will get the hang of it. i'm still getting used to the tablet myself, havent done anything with pencil/paper in ages.
if only i could get the hang of the painting side of digital art. sketching i can do. my digital painting skills are horrible.

no need to be embarrased either. you gotta start somewhere.

Hi werd

I second rebeccaK's calling - come to the Beginner's Lounge! There are great exercises there.

As to this attempt - I think you got a good feeling of the heads position in space and how the features are set in the face. The lines themselves are a bit jittery, but as paperclip mentioned: for a total newbie this is actally pretty cool.

Here are some things I did when I started and things I found useful on my way(which started not so long ago - I stillpost frequently in the Beginner's Lounge myself, you see.)

- in addition to digital sketching I bought a graphite mine and a sketchbook. There's nothing like a pencil and a piece of paper to learn to control your line. Just a motoric thing. And it's fun!

- I read and practised Andrew Loomis "Fun with a pencil". It is aimed at beginners and gives you the feeling that you can simply do it! The title matches the experience, too - it is fun!
Unfortunately the e-books have been removed from the web and are no longer in print, but I could maybe tell you where to find them if you sent me a pm...:p

- I did a lot of gesture sketches. You will find them explained along with a lot of them as reference assignments in the Beginner's Lounge and great reference material in the anatomy forum, in general

- The Anatomy forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177), in which the Beginner's Lounge is located proved to be a priceless well of useful tutorials and information, in general. Read the "find forum links fast" thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=273525)to find links to the anatomy reviews and shading tutorials. Also, there is a wealth of information in the tutorial thread in the art technique forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=226083) here on cgtalk! Read as much as you can! Try the things you find interesting. You can't go wrong!

Glad you posted! See you!

I’ve you are beginner then you might be talented. I mean the lines look a bit jumpy but the face looks very good especially the mouth which is a weak point for most starters

I agree with Mr Mu there nothing like a large piece of paper and start sketching and scan the results into your computer painting software

Keep going and have fun

Thank you guys for your opinions, they are very helpful. The bumpy lines are because I draw some lines slowly and my hand gets stuck on the tablet and squiggles around. I find it draws better lines the faster I draw, but im not good enough to draw very fast.

I did some sketches with a pencil and paper, as you guys have suggested. Ill try and post them later.;)

I think you have to exercice a lot before getting comfortable with the tablet and the pen. It's not something that happens right away - BUT quite quickly. I remember how I felt the first time I had to look at my screen instead of looking at the paper I'm drawing on. It's not easy all at once, but as I said : you very quickly get used to it.

:bounce: Ooo, keep drawing! :bounce: With the traditional media portrait, the facial features are listing slightly to the left a bit. Maybe it's just the scan/camera shot though. Really improving fast!

Awesome work!

Perhaps using a hard-edged brush to prevent the blurriness?

The up the great job!

Hi werd,

thank you very much for commenting my image and the kind words... Re your question about blurriness I have the same problem with my sky. There are some thechniques which I´m currently trying to learn...

I find this tutorials i.e. very useful, maybe it could help you too.

www.robertocampus.com (http://www.robertocampus.com)

I´m not really into portrait but what I´ve read so far about it is that one has to learn to control the pressure sensitivity in order to make good renderings. So, starting with big brushes, then smudging for blending and using small brushes for details. But it takes some time...

Your image looks very pretty, just continue...

Hope I could help you a little bit

P.S. just ask, if you like more tuts

Thank you for your replys and thanks for the tutorial trialanderror, that is such an awsome tut. that guys paintings are amazing. This cant realy be classified as a portrait tho because there is no refernce, hehe. Ill try and apply some of the tecniques and ill post the final image in a little while. Then ill start a new one :scream:!!

werd
03-22-2006, 08:01 AM
OK Im done this one for now, Ill do something new tomorrow. I figured out why its so blurry, its because the picture is only 512x512 or something small like that:p . Its realy hard to work with a small picture when blending i guess. Anyhow here it is along with the very first one I tried.

Nah, i think what you usually do is blending the colors and then re-add details to prevent from blurrieness. I don't think the resolution is doing the blur :)

When looking at your stuff i assume you probably always did some drawing before, maybe hobbywise (like me)? Looks like you have some practice allready.

I am beginning to draw and paint too, maybe i will start my own thread. But i am too shy yet :)

This forum inspired me quite alot, so keep posting werd and others :)

Ya, I used to draw a picture evry now and then. I think evryone draws like that tho dont they?. Ive always kind of been an artsy type. I write music and do some 3D stuff and write stories, but I never realy did much drawing. It wasnt till I started doing 3D that i realy got into art stuff. While I was trying to practise my 3D skills I found this site and saw all the amazing 2D art here. It inspired me to learn to draw and paint.:arteest: And I will definately keep posting my stuff :).

Here is some more drawings. The second one was meant for me to practise shapes, but the reference was to complicated for me to replicate haha.

The blending is very smooth and the characters pose looks extremly good... Re colors, anatomy I can tell you only things you already know but I´m convinced that there will be lots of help for you regarding this things in this forum... I still think that you are very talented...

it´s really hard to keep up with you werd. you are very fast. Re your images I think you have a very good eye for shapes and forms. Blending is very good and the hair looks realistic so far to me. In my opinion you´re doing very well. Just have fun, it´s getting better and better...

she turned into some kind of weird vampire type thing( dont even know how that happend:) )
As I said I´m also a beginner in portrait modelling but I think it´s just a matter of facial expression, the eyes are very widened and the eyebrows are very high. That´s why she looks so astonished. Facial expressions are not easy as one has to know exactly which muscle influences another. But I´m convinced that you get it done after some time as you know to control the tools more and more...
BTW I bought a book called Facial Expression by Gary Faigin, it´s as far as I know, one of the best available... Maybe you could give it a try...

Hope this was helpful...:)

Ive been getting alot of books and reading about drawing people, but I can never realy get the results I want. I guess itl get better with practise.

Anyhow, here is an attempt at drawing a face portrait. Ive flipped it all around, back and forth and upsidedown but I cant figure out why it doesnt look like her. Maybe the shading would help. Let me know what you think. Ill post a shaded version later.

Try to focus on the negative space of her features. You know, don't look at just the shape of her features but the shape around her features, the empty space if you will. It will really help improve your shapes!

werd
04-07-2006, 12:42 AM
Thanks Sylanya, thats kinda what I was doing. I flip it upsidown and frequently reverse the canvas to help me focus on the negative space. I always get sucked back into just drawing by memory tho, then my imagination warps it to my weird style:hmm:. Ill hafto work on that.

(I think you are making good progress in your thread;). hopefully ill do some color ones soon)
