as we all know by now, apple is now using intel in the new machines, some people have tried installing windows XP, vista, etc to no avail. Today a company has created an universal application that runs windows at near native speed for the new imacs its call winTel
Im not affiliated with the company, but posting this here for those who may be interested
http://openosx.com/wintel/
you can use this to install windows XP, or any version of linux, or whatever os that operates on x86 platform
here is a press release http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/01/17/wintel.2.0.for.mactels/
maybe this can help tid the way for more intel mac buyers as you can now run most of your windows/linux apps on the new imac, not sure how this would work for running 3d intensive programs such as maya or what not, maybe someone can post feedback
good luck!
