Older Render (http://www.vertpusher.com/images/scarlettRender3.jpg)

Hey guys, Its my first time using zbrush and I've been playing around trying to create a photoreal female head. The actress I'm using for reference is Scarlett Johansson, for those of you who don't know who she is here is a couple of reference pics

http://www.vertpusher.com/images/scarlettRef.jpg

And here's what I have so far:

http://www.vertpusher.com/images/scarlettWIPsm.jpg (http://www.vertpusher.com/images/scarlettWIPlg.jpg)

And here's some Zbrush screens:

So far I've blocked in a lot of skin detail but I really need to fine tune it and to work in some more mid frequency detail. However the next major task is to sort out the eyes and add some real eyeball geometry. Once I'm happy with all this stuff I'm going to do some assymetry stuff and then I'll get to work on textures as well as eyebrows, eyelashes and possibly hair. I hope to get a genuinely photoreal render out of all of this at some point in the future .

Anyway, any comments and crits are more than welcome, if you see anything that looks peculiar please let me know :).

Note - I started work on this head last summer and started a WIP thread then, however since the project's been dormant for so long I thought I'd start a new thread - hope that's ok!

nice head. IMO, I think the lips could be more thicker comparing to the photos. and the nose could come out a bit more.(I feel she needs some slight change to look more like a westerner)
just my thoughts. The model looks great. Hope to see more updates.

Ok, well I've done some work on my Scarlett head for the first time in a while, hopefully I'll be progressing quite a bit with this over the next few days.

I've started putting some skin textures together although as always eveything is a WIP, please ignore the half painted single eyebrow ;). Also it's worth mentioning the eyes are only very quickly thrown in, they aren't modelled correctly and the texture is just an old one I had lying around. Shader is a basic "stahlberg" style layered shader, rendered in maya software with render times around 30 seconds :).

Here's my first creepy render:

edit: nasty render replaced with a link so it doesn't hurt my eyes ;)

Next major priority is to sort out some decent eyes, eyelashes and eyebrows

wow.. her head is Sooo wide.

*edit*

ok, looked for some pics.. her head is way to wide..
i'm sure you allready have these pics, they show the width of the head pretty nicely.

i hardly reconnize her from the model.. i think went to work on the model with z-bursh and photoshop to quick, if you have to change much to get it accurate you'll have to start redoing stuff.

Yeah, the head seems really wide. Maybe you should check the proportions, I don't remember if it's supposed to be 4 or 5 eyes wide but I do know it's only one eye-width between the eyes and it seems like it's more now. Still, good start.

Hey good to see another guy on CGtalk from Bournemouth!! Looking great so far very good likness to her..

Thats a good model, how did you make the texture and what software did you use.

Hmm, I've taken another shot from a different angle and with a much less stupid focal length, I've also made the face a bit thinner but I believe most of that fatness was caused by a close up camera with a short focal length. I've also removed the eyes for now as they were distracting.

http://www.vertpusher.com/images/scarlettRender2.jpg

Hey sully, are you from the NCCA or do you just happen to live in Bournemouth? Unfortunately we don't have as big a presence on CGtalk as we should do but hopefully there will be a lot of good work coming out this year to put us on the map ;)

Hooded Python - Software used is maya, zbrush and photoshop, rendered in maya software. I'm in the process of writing up a tutorial on skin shading and some other stuff so watch this space for some more information.

I live in Bournemouth normally but im actually working in Denamrk at the moment, is the NCCA the course at Bournemouth uni? I went to the Arts Institute next door...

MattBirkett-Smith

Ahh, fair enough, the NCCA is the National Centre for Computer Animation (apparently), and is a department at Bournemouth uni, I'm on the BA course, to be honest it's a bit overrated and I would link you to our course website but I'd be embaressed.

Anyway, I'm currently investigating SSS and soon I'll be puttin gin decent eyes, eyebrows and eyelashes, I need to work out how the hell I'm going to do the hair as well.

I've been playing around a bit with miss_fast_skin and it's actually not as slow and painful as I'd expected.

I really need to paint a SSS map as well as tidying up some of my existing stuff. The ears are currently particularly crappy.

Good start. Lips could stand to be thicker (especially the top) judging from the reference photos. Also, it looks like the tip of the nose should be angled up more than what you have. I think once you nail those things you'll capture her personality. Lookin good.

Another update, im currently working on eyes, eyelashes and eyebrows, all of these are still WIP though. I've also tweaked my skin textures a bit.

Nice work with the skin!
My comments are that the cut of the mouth (where the 2 lips come together) should be straighter, because just now is making a V shape that is not in the photos you posted. Also I think the red in the eyes detracts a bit. Usually the red should be close to the lid, not to the iris, otherwhise she looks like she partied too much the other night... ;) Great likness, though, I am impressed.

wow, looks very nice, but i also got some crit on the eyes, the tear line is a very very nice detail, but it's overdone, she looks like she will cry bitterly in a few seconds...and we don't want to make that beautiful girl cry...right!?

so keep on working :buttrock:

Looks good, you could lower the distance of the eyes a bit i think.
if you go on like this the final will be great...

i was gonna say it doesn't look like her until i saw your last image with the eyes. Good work can't wait to see hair.

I must say that this is extremely good work. I am pretty certain that once the hair goes on, the likeness will be spot on. But before that, I have to say that her ears look like they could use a little more love. I feel that they could be a little more translucent in the thin places :)

I also agree about the tearline thing, it's nice but a little too much atm.

ok, I haven't updated this in a while. Still no hair but I've improved the skin a bit, hopefully I'll get a turnaround up soon.

thanks :)

Here's a very short turnaround, sorry about the high file size but I wanted to maintain the quality.

Looks good so far. One of the first things I noticed about Ms. Johansson is her lips. This is a minor nitpick, but maybe the lips could be tweaked a little? Other than that this is looking great. I will be following this thread. Keep at it!

I'm just curious, how do you think I should tweak the lips? I've been staring at the for so long I don't know what's right anymore....

Here's another still, more or less the same but I'm trying a white background, click for higher resolution one.

In the vain hope that someone may be interested in anything I've done here I've written quite a detailed research/tutorial document on head creation

I'll try to illustrate what I think are areas of interest for her lips with the attached paintover. I hope it helps. Just a suggestion.

I downloaded your paper and found it an excellent resource. This is extremely helpful for me since I still need to develop my own organic modeling ability. I will print it out and read it whenever I'm commuting. Thanks for sharing!

Hey guys, after another long period of absence I'm going to be coming back to this model and taking it a bit further, I intend to produce around a 10 second sequence of animation for a project I'm working on, for this she will need clothes and hair as well as a ton of blendshapes .....

Anyway, I've just started blocking out the torso, I haven't gone into it and made it very detailed as she will be clothed anyway - I just need to get the proportions about right, I am going to need to properly do the neck at some point but I haven't really looked at it closely yet. If anyone can spot any blatantly bad proportions then please let me know. It should be worth noting that I'm no longer trying to make this model look exactly like scarlett johansson, just reasonably similar will do.

First, I want to say this is an awesome female head! I hope I can achieve this skill of modeling someday! Do you model professionally or just for fun? Also, can I ask what technique did you use and are there any good tutorials that can assist me in modeling realistically in Maya?

Now, if you don't mind, I noticed a few differences between your model and Scarlet's photo.
In the photos it seems like her eyes are a little larger than your model's, mostly vertcially, although, they almost seem to far apart too.
The nose is slightly more upturned and comes out a little more in the photos.
The eyebrows are definetly thicker in the photos, but you probably haven't gotten around to that yet.
