View Full Version : The carnivorous sundew fairy
Digitalpaint 01-17-2006, 10:56 PM The carnivorous sundew fairy bugging one of her sisters..
Here’s my new (second) project. Using everything I’ve learned from my previous unfinished project (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=306124)
Initial sketch:

I know I should have made a total color layout before continuing but to be honest, I don’t know how..yet.. The strange thing is: I can feel what I want but I cannot visualize it at this stage. This has always been my problem. I feel the colors and I feel the light that I want but it’s always a struggle to get everything on paper…
Anyway, the carnivorous sundew fairy gets the skin of sarracenia x exellens
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/Arty2/realzonnendauw2.jpg
and sundew on her head.
Bugging one of her sisters who has beautiful butterfly wings. And lots of other insects and glowing things will be flying and flowing around.
The arrangement of things presented here isn’t the final one yet, I think i'm going to change the position of the hand.. Well, like i said it's just a first attempt …
To be continued…

Just a little update on the sundew part. I found it very difficult to get convincing effects. So it took me several hours…. .

My greatest personal discovery :) is the option “lock transparent pixels” It saves me soooo much time not having to make countless masks and selections. It’s great..
Thanks for the encouraging replies….

I'm curious about your workflow. I have never seen an artist paint detail by detail, is that how you usually work?

I’m on a journey: discovering Photoshop as a painting tool. And there’s so much I have to learn.
In my current project: there are lot’s of parts of which I’m very uncertain whether or not I’m able to paint them at all. So I handle them one by one and give it my best shot.
I think that when I grow more confident of my abilities I will certainly abandon my current workflow because now I really don’t know where this project is heading to exactly. Sounds a bit stupid I know but my primary objective is to learn and gain experience etc etc….
I feel like a little kid in a candystore ..... I’m on a journey… and I like it…

I can appreciate that sentiment Arty2. I feel the same way.
It's a great feeling when you discover something new when working on a project. It's certainly a journey...you picked the right word for it. :)
I like this one! Can't wait for more updates!

The carnivorous Sundew Fairy
Hair strands group together to form the tentacles with a sticky fluid at the tip Attracting various insects. She ate all day without any effort and took no exercise what so ever. And then one day she became too heavy to fly.
So now on a very strict diet.
And she get’s very much pissed off when she sees all her younger and lighter sister fairies flying with little effort……..
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/Arty2/TCSF_EmileNoordeloos230106b.jpg
Slow progress. I had a lot of problems with the tentacles ( fluid not attached to it in this screendump) and the mouth. The sundew tentacles have become more SF-machine like instead of real plant like stuff. But I like the effect and it gives me ideas for future projects :)

i agree with paperclip on the hair, i really love the style and idea of it :)
but i liked her face in the sketch more than the painted one cause this looks older and not so cute anymore and it lost a bit of its wickedness too.
im really wainting for an update and subscribed to your thread :)

@ Paperclip & Llynna, I think so too. I guess t was focusing too much on my technique. Today I tried to improve her looks a bit.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/Arty2/TCSF_EmileNoordeloos240106.jpg
Her skin is still very harsh which I think adds also to the older and bitchy looks. As I mentioned before I’m planning to give her the skin of sarracenia x exellens …so I’ll work on this too

I love how the skin texture is duplicated in miniature in the eye as well. Did you draw the skin texture on a seperate layer? It looks so real I could swear the texture was from a photo...but you're good enough that it's probably drawn and layered over it, right?
Also I wanted to maybe suggest not leaving a gap between the lips because I know at least I purse my lips tighter the more pissed off I am. If she's being a jerk she'd probably have her lips set together somewhat. Having the mouth partially open seems to me more of an innocent/childlike expression.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments
If there’s one thing I’ve learned during this project than it’s to more carefully work out the idea and think everything over. I didn’t do that. I started this painting much unprepared, I mean I had an idea and after some sketching I just started. So, ever so often I get carried away when I’m applying a newly discovered( well to me :) ) effect to a part of the painting And then I’m forgetting that that part is also a piece of a larger scene/painting.
You’re right she isn’t cute or bitchy anymore; I think I’ll just change the story about the sundew fairy a bit  Also, while working on this painting I wondered why did i give her these sundew tentacles on her head as well as a mouth for feeding?.....(help)
The texture was made by painting ( with the aid of a photo reference..) a small part with spots etc.. in several sizes. Then clone/stamped/g.blurred and sometimes enlarged it a bit until I had a large piece of texture (fitted together (planning the layout to roughly fit the form and structure of the face) and sculpted it on one half of the face with the aid of the cs2- liquid plug-in. When half of the face was done i copied and flipped it to fit the other half of the face aswell, adding a little deformation and a little more painting to make some corrections...
And the skin is still not finished yet, so no update picture tonight..

Changing the story's fine with me! Go for it. I think she has a mouth for talking/breathing, and tentacles for eating. So I guess that'd mean her mouth would be specialized only for air passage (no saliva, mucus instead, no swallowing reflex, no teeth...and maybe not even a tongue. Except she might need something similar for speech). This would mean though that she doesn't need both a mouth and a nose. She should have sweet breath too - to attract more insects. Sorry - that's the biologist in me speaking. Fairy's are magical so they don't have to be scientifically accurate.
Thanks for letting us in on your skin technique!

Thanks Vizon for helping me out. I now feel a lot better about her
And your idea of her having a sweet breath appeals very much to me. Too bad i cannot implement such a feature :) . But who knows, maybe one day...

Looking magnificent, Arty! Coming along like the Masterpiece it is. I am sure that the creases/cracks running across her face are intentional, but you are aware that they do give a Frankenstein/scar-like impression, right (particularly since she's green)? Just want to make sure that's your intent. It certainly gives her character! One thing about leaves I've noticed is that their veins seem symmetrical most of the time, running out from the stem (like smaller and smaller pipes all originating from a water vein...which I guess is what it is...) But I'll wager her veins are internal like a person's...so maybe that doesn't apply. Well, it's beautiful no matter what. Keep at it!

I think you have a really good concept there.
I think the lips looked better with less detail with black/ tonal green with more black value.

Thank you all very much for the encouraging replies. It certainly fuels my enthusiasm.
@ Vizion: You’re right the concept is very unscientific.
Like I said before: this project wasn’t planned from start to finish. It’s a personal journey.
But don’t get me wrong, I value your comments :)
@ FlyingP:
At moment I’m working on the basic texture of the skin and the hair. Trying to fuse them with the tentacles. I’ve also painted the hand ( struggle..) and gave it some highlights which gave the skin a rubbery (w.little highlight) or a metal (w. lots of highlights) appearance….. have to find the right balance
@ Aloriael:

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8885/fairycopy6qe.jpg - is my test to see if it looks any better or worse... (sorry i'm bad rusty painter).
I was thinking about adding some more color ( pink/reddish) to some of her large veins, finger nails and lips. So Aloriael I might adopt your suggestion, you’ve made her lips very sweet and soft.
But I’m not sure what type of fairy she’ll become …... I don’t want to paint a glamour girl fairy, that’s why I made the creases/cracks running across her face more prominent. But I don’t want a total creep either…
Thanks again, Emile

@Monster_General, Xillion, Loris_, zpapageo, Mfunky and Thekkur: thank you for the supporting comments. Because of you guy’s I might even finish this project:)
@Neoquark: the drops are made by filling the basic colors roughly in a circle. Then smudge paint/push/mix the colors to the side of the circle and when I’m happy I deform it to the shape that I need. I must confess that chance and luck are playing a major role in the outcome. I often have to start several times over so...
I’m recovering from a small operation to my knee a few day’s ago.
These last few days I had very little energy for anything really.. But today I’m feeling a lot better , made friends with my Wacom again and here’s a small update of TCSF
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/Arty2/TCSF_EmileNoordeloos_Fairy0.jpg
I ‘ve started working on the little fairy who’s being teased by TCSF. She has lots of details which sadly are invisible when you zoom out ..
Anyway she’s far from ready, she needs wings and her hair needs some more attention.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/Arty2/TCSF_EmileNoordeloos_Fairy2.jpg
The recovery time, away from my real job (which has nothing to do with art) enables me to work on this painting . Normally I would't have been able to find enough time for this…I’m thinking about starting to work part-time and spend the new free time on painting..…..( Yeah, i like to do some day dreaming now and then :).)
.

really looking awesome there. I do have a suggestion/comment. The main characters face seems alittle too monochromatic. Makes her look like shes dead or a statue. Maybe you could had more touches of the red like at the tip of the tentacle in her cheeks or other areas of her face to add some more life to her face.keep it goin

I've been loving this piece right from the start ! Now I find that you are loosing a bit of contrast ? Particularly in the eye area.
I would also suggest that you balance the green color with just some very very slight touches of red here and there : the corners of her eyes, just a little more red in her lips and why not also on her nails ? I find it would balance well with the red thingies in her hair and help the composition.
The little fairy should be more like her color- and contrastwise in my opinion.
But like everybody else, I'm looking forward to the end of this one ! Super piece !

she's not looking at the fairy and i agree with you on the hands... maybe just tone down the texture a bit, add in some redness? and smooth out a few of the shadows? *shrugs* as it is i love the picture, i've been watching it and what you're making... it's very beautiful

Wow, beautiful...:applause:
With respect to the smaller figure, my only suggestion might be that she needs a bit more of a transition from upper > lower torso ~ she seems just a bit truncated, and adding more length to her torso would give the figure a bit more grace. Also, her upper arm / shoulder area is nearly as thick as her waist, which looks a bit odd...you might try slimming that area down just a tad. Just a suggestion, though...great to see this quality of work on the boards!
Cheers, :)

I want to have all the parts in place. Fairy, hair, water drops insects etc etc. and then add some more color variation. B.t.w. the contrast was influenced by a layer adjustment effect which took over the whole picture .
@tyrful: Thanks, I moved the fairy up and down to get her in place ( but she still gives me trouble L and then TCSF didn’t know where to look anymore. About the hand: i’m going to try something like you said or give her some sundew tentacles :)
@Rebeccak, Funny i didn’t see that until now, you’re right.
I used an Olympic diver’s picture for ref. I was hypnotized by the beautiful curves of her arms and legs, and I love curves :)
Anyway, thank you very much
@ LDiehl: Thanks for the suggestion and you know what? I already tried that. TCSF looked too sweet so I tried a different mouth(S) but I couldn’t get it right it and took soo much time .. I gave up ( at least for now:)
@paperclip: Thanks Theresa, glad you like the progress.Hey I see you found a friend with almost my nickname ( for a moment I thought it was m….:)
@Andrea Biffi: Thanks a lot I wish i could do some 3d modeling like you
@ enialadam: Thanks , you’re right i'm working on it
@ flyingP: Thanks, wait for the new update i think I’ve fixed it
@ velvetta: thank you very much I’m glad you like the picture so far
Sorry no pic today

Common Emile !
You have to get this finished for submission in the new Ballistics book - I think the deadline is about the 27th February or something like that - I WON'T buy it if you're not in it !!!

this is going to be great - I feel it!
I knew it!
Through your struggles you still managed to keep that magic of the working sketch and still produce this refined painting with that enchanting composition.

@ Elsie: Thanks, I really appreciate your nice comment
@ tyrful: Thanks I’ve learned many things while working on this painting but I still make many mistakes and have to repaint a lot. So progress is slow. …
@ Mr Mu: I meant it
@JMcWilliams: thank you. What an incredible project you’re working on, great stuff
@ Vizon: How do you like YOUR hand? I think it’s a great improvement …
I was really surprised that someone would go though all that trouble for a total stranger (me) Thank you sooooooooooooo much for your modeling pic’s!

@ paperclip: When I started this painting I wanted several insects flying around but when TCSF took so much space I abandoned this idea. Then the previous small fairy started to bother me, it just didn’t fit in.
The new fairy brought this bumblebee along and made it a much more adventurous scene I think she’s here to stay :)
Next CGchallenge? Well who knows? ( I’ll be watching you anyway :D )
Theresa, thanks for your nice words. Have lots of fun in Rome!
@enialadam: Thank you. It was fun to watch your fairytale paintings too, Snow white’s my fav.
@sh@ke: Thanks Michael, ( if I only could have a little bit of your speed & talent :) )
@slickgreekgeo & @ thisly: Thanks a lot, I’m glad you like it
@se7enthcin: Thanks for your comment Andrew, I’ll finish this painting for sure.
I’ve painted another mouth ( as some of you suggested.. ) but I’m not sure if this new mouth is a better choice… Old:

No, I think it looks good - it interacts perfectly with the elastic feeling of the green thingy she's holding between her fingers. Just perfect !
ThePhotographer
02-14-2006, 10:37 PM
The bee - I wouldn't make it blue unless you count on introducing blue in other areas too. If not I would make it more redbrown to make it fit more with the red areas of the image. I would also just brighten a slight bit what is supposed to be the white of her eyes. Just a slight bit brighter green than the skin tone.

I like it Alot!! Great textures.

02-14-2006, 11:29 PM
i think the new mouth fits alot better and i love the teeth lol... but maybe something more of a smirk would fit even more? perhaps lower one eyebrow slightly *shrug*... where the fingers are gripping the string i think you should darken the strring a bit, just slightly darker to show the shadow of the fingers.... >.>
also while i'm enjoying the new fairy both her and the old one had a severe lack of sundew tenticles involved and this one have more of a yellow tinge to her than TCSF... and i'd have to agree with Photographer on the blue bee... unless you intend on adding more blue to the rest of the pictures then it really does ditract, it stands out and makes itself the focus when it isn't.
anyway keep it comin!

Maybe some value on those fingers, would make the fingers seem more rounded, and give it depth, seems a bit flat, right now, looks really good though, good luck with finishing!

Absolutely stunning progress Emile, I love the new lips! My only suggestion at the moment is that the skin looks like it could use a little more moisture to it - it just looks a little too dry and crackly at the moment, like its all about to flake off ^^ - perhaps a little shine or dewdrops? anyway, just watching in awe...everytime I start to think I'm getting better :scream: hehe!

well arty, I really think like you, the new mouth is a great idea and when you look at it from a very close spot it doesn't bother me at all, but if I stare at the whole painting, there is some annoying thing about her face that I can't pinpoint. She seems to be sillier than evil.
Anyway it's a great great job, and I really look forward to see the end of his beautifull piece of art
cheers

Wow, what a nice experience this was and now this is the end of my TCSF journey.
The effect it has on me reminds me of the time when I was a little boy, Saturday afternoon in a swimming pool with my friends and this huge chute/waterslide. Climbing the stairs of this thing was very hard for me and it took for ever to reach the top. But hey, going down was such a fun experience. Feeling funny in my belly and very happy. Well, something like that …
Thanks everybody for all the votes and nice replies.
Now let’s do this again…:)
Ps, I feel very silly for not having done any painting at all these last few years. Too busy with wife kids study and work ( healthcare )
I’ve worked very shortly for an illustrator’s agency in Amsterdam/Lauriergracht. They were very kind people but I was just a kid then (’83) and not ready for the big city and all that.
Anyway that’s a little bit of my story. I’ve made plans to work on a portfolio again and then do a “reboot”
