View Full Version : intel-iMac G5 ... no cinebench score :(
vid2k2 01-17-2006, 07:13 PM Just got back from the Apple store without cinebench results as the
cinebench wouldn't boot up. Very disappointing.
We talked about rosetta and that this iMac will function as a dual monitor
with others of its'kind (not with older G5 iMacs)
The wait goes on .....

On Arstechnica there is a cinebench score of the new iMac. I wonder how they got it working? Maxon does have a beta cinebench but it's not available to the public yet.
Nevertheless the PM G5 dual 2.5 scores a lot better still:

Cinebench here: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/imac-coreduo.ars/6
On a sidenote: no Windows booting possible yet (even with Vista).

Looking at these CB-scores and the ones that Apple posted on their website make you wonder if Apple again manipulated these scores rather extreme or (I hope) Arstechnica used an old Cinebench running under Rosetta.
Running the old Cinebench on an Intel Mac is rather pointless. Tests on developer systems indicate that current OS X versions of CINEMA will run using Rosetta, but to get an application speed that is realy usefull you will have to wait for the native version.

So does this mean they ran the old Cinebench? That's rather stupid

I was refering to vid2k2s posting saying that he tried to run Cinebench, not to the tests done by Apple for their announcement.

Sorry Björn, I was referring to Arstechnica. They show rather disappointing CB-scores. Do you happen to know if they used a beta Cinebench or are these low scores a result of old CB and Rosetta.
Thanks,
odo
From the context the ars technica article makes it clear that all tests were performed using the Power PC applications with Rosetta on Intel Macs. So they used the same PPC native Cinebench that is currently available from the Maxon website and that vid2k2 tried to use in the Apple shop.
All the Ars Technica article shows is that it does work, but that you have to wait for native apps to be able to work realy productive with apps that depend on fast CPUs.
Cheers
Björn
Edit On the other hand, I wanted to see how much of a performance hit Rosetta caused when using PowerPC binaries. So I chose one old standard—the Photoshop bakeoff—and a couple of other benchmarking apps: Cinebench and Unreal Tournament 2K4.
Thanks, that is clear then. :)

Does 394 seem a little slow for the Dual 2.5 G5?
We have dual 2.5's here at work and they seem to get around 500ish.

Hi Srek...Do have any idea when the MAC INTEL version is going to ship and what is the cross over policy, as i am itching for a 20" intel imac.

Thanks for the insight Björn,
I was in the area and had the cinebench on a DVD, so I thought I'd give it a try.
The CB opened fine on all the other macs, so, I don't know how Ars Tech
did it. The display model just had 512 ram and the standard fx card rather than
the fx upgrade available for that model. hence, the CB score would not have
been to full potential.

You have to wait for an official announcement by Maxon on this

make sure you are using the G5 version - there is a normal Cinebench 2003, a Cinebench 2003 G5 version and the Cinebench XP 64bit preview
i ran the original and the G5 version just to compare the differences and it seems you may have run the non-G5 version to get those low scores
