Hi people! As you may seen, i wanna buy ATI's graphic card for my pc (had a bad expirience with previous nvidia...). I need help to determine which one ti buy. Have a bit slow machine, but it'll be upgraded soon, ..it's 1.8GHz Celeron, 512MB (i know it's little, but...).
Just post your oppinions which one among ATI's is at the top....
Is it better to buy, for example, 9550 with 256MB (since it's cheeper for 10$) or 9600Pro with 128MB...
thanks, in advance...

Check out the detailed listing of qualified ATI cards in the alias website.

In my personal experience on an older machine I have, I couldn't get maya to work with the radeon 9550. this could have been something else in the configuration perhaps, but after looking over my entire system, the guy at Alias tech support said it was probably the card/drivers.

:) Kind of strange, you seem to have the opposite situation I had; ATI card didnt work for me in Maya, so in my new build I switched to Nvidia, and it works great.

best of luck, either way.

The 9600 will be better than the 9550 even with half the ram, but both cards are pretty ancient now, I'd honestly be surprised if you couldn't get a 9600 card for 10-20 quid..... actually:

Currently going for £8

There are loads on ebay going for pocket change.

bad experience with nvidia??? well i hate to say it.. but ati is far worse. If your thinking of doing any 3d work at all.. i wouldnt even think of buying ati.

just my opinion... but ati drivers are trash.

quoted for agreement. don't dismiss nvidia because of one bad experience, when the collective experience of just about everyone on this forum will tell you that nvidia is far superior to ati as far as content creation goes. ati makes fine gaming cards, but if you want to use 3d apps, get nvidia.

add another one to ATI sucks.

Not for 3D, no way, no how. I wouldn't take one if it was given to me for free.

I would, I'd sell it to the original poster and buy an nvidia with the cash ;-)

What was the bad experience may I ask and who was the builder, BFG, eVGA, gainward, PNY?

I have a few friends succesfully using ATI cards for maya but there are a lot of issues with overlays, ghosting, hardware rendering. I personally like nvidia, and my 6800 runs great as a softquadded FX 4000.

For me, i have a P4 Prescott 3Ghz, 2GRam 3200, and an ATI X800XT PE 256, and maya work properly. I just can't use the high quality rendering, (in viewports), some artefacts comes, but for the rest, it's very good deal. ;)

Speaking from experience on the Maya side of it Ati are well known in the forums for poor drivers , I hear that the latest ati models have improved a great deal but i would not risk it again, stick with nvidia if you want reliability.

ATI cards seem to work ok for games, but nVidia is the way to go for 3D apps.
