depending on how many polys your looking at, the graphic card still might not be able to handle it..and depending on what your previewing it might be due to the cpu as well, though im not a tech guru so im not positive, just some advice.

base on my exp. using max, I don't using opengl, try change to DirectX on display driver, some how I think I got more faster/performance rather using opengl
in directx option uncheck box all using triangle
but still I think this not help much..., some people say it depand your cpu too
for me I just want buy new quadro 1400/3450 and amd x2 system

Use Directx because, according to autodesk, max as a special cache that is loaded into your gpu ram. So basically your models are cached into memory and accessed right from the same board. This is what an autodesk guy told us at a preview of max 7 at my school.

So is the recomendation to use direct-x with max all the time, or just for this general question?

on my system four viewport windows bog my speed down as opposed to running one view "maximised"...I get a noticeable speed improvement when i do this
