View Full Version : Feedback from nvidia regarding 7800 gtx/ dual core issues
RPG2006 01-16-2006, 04:39 PM Just thought this maybe of interest.
My email to nvidia and response.
Could you please tell me whether we can look forward to any new drivers for the 7800 gtx, which will rectify the dual core/3d applications issue. 82.12 beta seems to of fixed the cpu usage issue, however in Lightwave/modeler the opengl display locks up every few minutes, and you need to refresh to get it working again. I have to revert back to 77.77. I can appreciate that the quadros are aimed at this market, however it does leave a lot of frustrated and dissapointed 3d artist who have invested in the 7800 gtx card. Please give us a bit of support with regards this, it would certainly help regain a bit of faith in your company. Thank you for your help.
Nvidia's response.
In the next driver release. we will provide an option to override our dual core optimizations. Alot of crashes or corruptions in 3d applications which take advantage of dual core/dual processor systems are caused by a software applicatiions custom tuned optimizations which overrite or conflict with the NVIDIA graphics card optimizations.
------------------------------------
The problem is being addressed, so thank you Nvidia.:)

82.12 has worked great for me in LW. LW has stopped crashing and my CPU usage is good. I dont have dual core though, so this might be a specific issue.

Interesting. There definitely is problem with the drivers. Check this thread out as well-

Btw I just got e-mail form my PC guy and he said that the delievery of my MSI 7800GTX/512Mb card has been delayed to end of this month. He has given me the option to cancel the order and get something else. I am thinking of getting the Quadro instead. Grr I neeed to make a decision within next few days. I wonder if Quadro drivers are rock solid?

Yes that's right.
I think we discussed this a while ago. From what I've read and experienced it seems that it's predominantely related to nvidia's drivers and dual core X2 and dual xeon processors.
The main issue has been that it's all been speculation so far, and proposed remedies have been various Hotfixes, patches, driver cleaning etc. It's good that Nvidia have actually acknowledged the problem though and are now addressing it. Encouraging.:)

How on earth did you get nvidia to respond to your email? lol

The nvidia dual core problem was fixed a few weeks ago. Just go grab the latest drivers from their website.

I actually posted a thread here a few weeks ago, saying what you are saying. I thought that the problem had indeeed been solved. if you read my post here you will see that it isn't totally fixed, and there are enough others out and about on the net still experiencing problems. 82.12 beta drivers do get rid of the dual core/ cpu usage issue ie idling at 50%, and shooting up to 100% for the simplest of tasks, however there are still glitches. For instance again, as I mentioned above the modeler viewport in Lightwave freezes every few minutes, and you have to refresh it to get it going again. I've tried pretty much all the drivers going, hotfixes, patches etc.
The response I have posted was received a few hours ago, so nvidia are acknowledging that there is still a problem, and that it hasn't yet been solved properly.
Crayox, I think it might of just been lucking timing.

Just figured out how I can now use Maya and the latest driver's from Nvidia for my 7800gtx-equipped PC.
What I did was use WindowsXP Launcher where you can pick how many processors a program uses, and then use that "shortcut" in that program to launch it. Now I'm launching Maya from this and it seems to have fixed my problem I was having.
My problem I was having was erratic camera movement in all 4 views. Where I'd use my mouse wheel to scroll in and out, and it would sorta "shutter" between the regular distance and the desired distance. It basically made Maya useless to me when this happened (sometimes I'd just switch views a few times and it fix it for that time Maya was open). Now it seems to be working fine though :)

I recently upgraded my system to a Opteron 175 w/7800GT. I noticed while trying to run Cinebench my cpu meter was showing 50% before I even started any tests. I was like...what the hell is this crap...
I closed Cinebench and opened Cinema 4D. Same thing...50% processor usage just sitting idle. I had the idea it was a display driver issue so turned off OpenGL in Cinema by putting it in Software display mode. Sure enough processor stopped showing 50% at idle.
Then I fired up Blender...again 50% at idle. We definatly have an OpenGL problem here.
I play Battlefield 2 so I was pretty sure I had the most recent driver. Dnloaded 81.98 from Nvidia. I did a complete video driver removal before reinstalling 81.98 driver.
That seemed to fix the OpenGL problem. But 2 days ago I discovered I get a CPU usage issue in After Effects. If I just move my cursor around in a circle in After Effects it goes all the way up to 100%. Crazy!
Let me go see if I can find this 82.12 Beta.
peace,

One of the places you will find it is on www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com). :)
I was reading on the nvidia forum that there are details in the release notes for some of these drivers, explaing how to overide the dual optimizations via regedit. Don't know more than that though.

Ah, poo. Well if its any help, I can confirm that the following all work fine without whacking up the cpu or pausing.
premiere
c4d
virtualdub
photoshop cs2
nero
quicktime
camtasia
If any of these are causing a problem then it could be a specific setting we have different. To the best of my knowledge, the only settings ive changed from defaults are limiting ogl to a single screen and turning off vsync, this is with 81.98.

OK whats this "82.12 " ??? also do you get that problem on Maya ?

Maya appears to be pretty good.
Check www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com). scroll down a bit and you will see a list of forceware drivers including 82.12.
There are a few thoughts that comes to mind, since this news. Why would I want to overide dual core optimizations? Surely I want those. Do various 3d apps need to accommodate the dual cores better? If I'm going to override dual core optimizations, am I not just better off sticking with 77.77 and 78.01 drivers?
RPG
Lightwave and modo have worked flawlessly for me ever since I installed 82.12. So perhaps this is now solely a dual core issue, as I have dual single cores...
