View Full Version : 30 Days
jullenar 01-16-2006, 08:45 AM I've turned this into just a sketch thread, not an every day thing. There's a new sketch on the second page now.
History of thread:
I've downloaded the trial version of painter and decided to take full advantage of it by trying to do a sketch a day for the thirty days. They will mostlikely only be sketches, since i don't have time to play all day with painter, but I like sketchy paintings anyway.
About specific crits... I have a hard time shading in a color painting without making it look muddy. I can do it with real paint, but digitally i have the hardest time, and I haven't done a life painting in a long time so that jsut makes it worse. Any tips about that would be greatly appreciated.

This one feels a lot more sketchy to me, and there are some anatomical problems, but I still like it. I kind of intended for it to be humorous, imagining him as the guardian of the trees or some silly nonsense like that.

I did these two for the DSG and I figure they counted towards this too. I'll try to make some higher quality ones next time.

These are really nice sketchy paintings. Two thumbs up from me! It might be fun to hear your thoughts of the demo to painter as well... like what new tools are you using/discovering on each new pic and how the program compares to other ones you have used in the past.

To all of the above: Thanks guys, I appreciate the encouragement.
Pixelcritter: LOL, thanks for the tip. I went ahead and bought painter already though. Now I just have to wait for it to ship.
Here's my Nov (with a little fan tribute if anyone gets it). Now, the question is: why is he shirtless in Nov? Answer: I don't know. I forgot to put a shirt on until the end and didn't like how it was turning out, so I decided maybe he really likes the cold. While I was visiting the Mediteranean recently there was a guy from russia swimming in it while it was rainy and about 55 degrees! So, maybe this guys is from russia? :D
Done in Painter and Photoshop (with my own custom leaf brush this time). Took me about 2 hours.

love the scarf , the way you pop in some really simple confident strokes is really nice. It's not overworked like a lot of CG talk stuff tends to be.

I second that. I really liked the idea of a demo diary and would love to hear what is on your mind.
I know: you ordered it already, but maybe you could continue this as a little journey into this piece of software? Might be instructive.
I do like the colors you use!

I've officially turned this into a WIP thread. ;) Well, sort of. This one is a WIP. I haven't painted over a sketch yet (except for the first one, which I didn't really adhere to very accurately, and didn't experiment with), which is my usually way of CG painting, and I wanted to see what I could do with that. I think it's much better in painter than in Photoshop (I’ve had the worst luck in Photoshop. I can't paint in there worth anything!!). I was able to pretty well blend the pencil lines into the painting which is awesome! Doing it this way takes twice as long as just starting the image in painter, but the results tend to be a little more accurate, more finished looking. Hopefully it won't end up too over worked when I get done with it. I like to try to keep the paint fresh, as my water color instructor used to say. Anyway, it's after 2am (I’m living on the other side of the world for now) and I’m very tired. Please forgive any typos, grammatical errors, or just general bad writing. Hopefully I'll finish her tomorrow.
I'll try to do the journal thing from now on since I've had two requests for it, but I’ll do it tomorrow :D

Mr. Mu and Ninetales: Thanks a lot! :wavey:
I don’t know why, but my image host keeps resizing my image. It hasn’t done it to any of the others, just this one. I’ve tried a ton of things and re-uploaded it like 5 times (and my internet is way too slow) but this is the best I could get. Oh well, look at what you can I guess.
I really like that I can blend the sketch into the painting in painter (as I mentioned in the previous post). The more I worked on it the more it just seemed to disappear. I haven’t played with too many of the tools besides the artists oils. I love those because they are the most like real painting, but no turpentine, and messy everything! I don’t like the water colors so much though. I plaid with those in my June sketch. They don’t seem to blend naturally, but that could be because of the tool settings, which I may explore later.
Originally I had imagined her as some sort of nun or devout person, but then I was inspired by the DSG so she ended up being December, the time of year when autumn turns to winter. I spent way too long working on her. There are a few areas I would keep working on, but I’m tired, and tired of it. I would guess that I spent about 10-12 hours on this. I was thinking of putting this one in the finished section, any thoughts on that?

jullenar - I see you are using photobucket - they resize pics if they are bigger than 512 kb. Maybe it's simply too big?
As for the painting - that's a very nice idea. You might definitely post it in the finished2D-section (take a look at it - yours would definitely rank among the more pleasant views there), but if you want to go "full public exposure" I'd suggest depicting the whole figure and adding more substance to the lower background you would have to create then.
Just my 2 cents. Keep it up! I am checking regularly...

He reminds me of Mr. Tumnus. Mr. Tumnus was out in the cold snow with no shirt and a red scarf. And he was carrying books.

Mr. Mu: Thanks for your 2 cents. It's a good idea, i'm not sure I will pick it up again though.
Vizon: I didn't think about it until you said it, but he really does have the Mr. Tumnus feel.
I didn't post yesterday because I took a break from the computer and didn't touch it (except to check my e-mail).
Here's my latest scribble, and it's just that, a scribble, but I think it still has some charm. I played with Painter's grease pencil to do this one. It's a lot like photoshops smudge tool with color attached to it. I like it small, It affects too much when it's big.

That is such a good idea, 30 paintings for 30 days like a visual diary. I like most of U'r paintings I particularly like your choice of colours, any way thats eough brown noseing. Good work!

I know it's been way too long since I last posted! I have no good excuses, lack of inspiration, busy, whatever. Here's my latest sketch.
Daedra lord and ped-o: Thanks for the comments.
I have my legit version of painter now along with a brand new 9x12 wacon tablet! I LOVE my tablet!!
Branching beyond the oil paints, this is mostly done with the conte crayon tools. They work so much better on my new tablet, versus my old 4x5 (or whatever) intuos 1!!

great work jullenar
but dont like much these last two dont know why though perhaps because the colors are less vivid or dull if you prefer
are you ever going to complete any of them??

Teal-K: Thanks for you comments. I wasn't really thrilled with the brown one either, but I still like the last one. I finished the December painting. I've refined it a little more since I posted it here, but this version is almost exactly the same as the one I put in the finished section. I should have followed Mr. Mu's advice, but I was pretty tired of it by that time. But I did take note of it, I have a whole figure in this one. :D
Here is another one I plan on finishing. It's not nearly complete. I am going to try for a more "graphic" feel with this one. I want to see how well I can combine my painterly style with something a little more modern. We'll see. A lot more use of Photoshop in this one. The big empty brown section will have roots in it, I think, and the primary light sorce is coming from where she touches the ground. I have to work that out before I can know what color to make the highlights on the figure. I am also a little stumped about what should be in the background on the top. I wanted to do more than my usual, multy colored background. We'll see. Any suggestions?

Here's an update. I'm not sure if I like the direction it's going in yet. There are a few things I'm going to change.

Here's the latest update. I changed the composition of the upper part and I like it better this way, rather than right in the middle. It's turned into a bit of a photo collage, which is okay with me, that's sort of what I wanted. Two of the photos I found online, they were not taken by me. I like it so far. still have to figure out what to put in the lower portion and tweak a few things but I'd say it's 70% done.
