View Full Version : adequate workstation requirements?
JBirdAngel 01-16-2006, 08:59 AM hello,
i am interested in aquiring an adequate 3d workstation.
i prefer something as small and as light that is adequate and cost effective.
i dont fully know what to be looking for so any advice would be nice.
what should i be looking for in order to be able to know if the 3d graphics of a system is adequate, or what should i be looking for in an adequate card for 3d work?
what other requirements should i be looking for?
any other thoughts or advice would be nice.
okay thank you - jason

Say what software will you use, and what will be the sizes of models you'll work with.
Also saying how much you want to pay for it will help people here to help you. :)

1 gig of ram minimum. 2 gigs a good idea.
Nothing below a 6800 as you will start to feel the pinch.
Amd 64 bit processor. Preferably an X2.

okay thank you for the replies :)
i havnt gotten fully into 3d yet, my current laptop has an intel extreme graphics 2 which my understanding is that that is not adequate (is that correct?).
for now i intend to use blender, however if i later decide to go with a commercial software (which i want the new computer to be able to handle that adequatly) i would probably go with XSI or C4D for the lower pricing.
i want to spend as little as possible, but i want an adequate system that would hopefully last me as long a time as possible, i prefer a laptop, i want to be mobile/portable, weighing different things i think that for portablility a laptop could end up being as cost effective as a desktop, for things such as if carrying a bag that is just a computer causes to check in a bag and loose it in an airport, if carrying more stuff were to cause health problems, those kinds of things. i actually would prefer mor elike a 12 inch screen to the 14 i have now.
anyways as i was saying id like to spend as little as possible, but i want a system that is adequate and that will last, im not looking for gaming/srruond sound or things like that, an adequate system for 3d work that will last.
i dont know enough to know what size models ill be working with, my intent is to make or be part of making quality animations to spread the Good News, i want to be able to able to make professional level things.
okay thank you :) - jason

Get a desktop if you want it to last. That way you have the chance to upgrade down the road. For a laptop, you're basically stuck with what you get except for a few parts.
Maybe you could look at some Shuttles.
