@#$%^&* computers!

My desktop stays on 24/7. Until now that is. I happened to be doing something in the vicinity of the computer and noticed it was in boot mode. I thought that perhaps a Windows update was being installed and it auto-restarted the machine. The XP splash screen appeared, keyboard lit up, the keboard light went off, and the machine started the boot cycle again. I turned off the computer then turned it on again but same thing is still happening. I checked fans (vid card, cpu, case, & psu) and they all seem to be working. Memory Test runs o.k. but I haven't physically checked them yet- I have 3 Micron 512MB DDR sticks. No drivers changed or anything. I tried booting into Safe Mode but same thing. I'm thinking it had something to do with an automatic update but I don't even know if an update actually took place prior to this crashing. Maybe a virus or hack? I'm going to try to do a Windows Repair and keep fingers crossed. I hope I don't have to reformat.

Any ideas?

If windows restarts while booting, you should check the harddisk. Sometimes, despite all the harddisk data corruption protection and the NTFS file system, bits and bytes of files just get... lost. Nothing that couldn't be repaired, but if it hits a vital system file, windows will refuse to boot until that has been fixed.

Checkdisk can do that for you:
Insert the WinXP-Install-CD, and go into the Recovery Console (hit "R" on the first blue dialog). Log on to your installation (usually C:\Windows\), and then enter:
chkdsk /p
Let him repair the files, then restart. Usually that should make your Windows boot again. If this continues to happen, you might want to check your HDs and replace ones which corrupt files repeatedly.

Any new hardware installed recently?

Early diagnosis steps:
Check disk
Test memory
Change Power Supply
Change memory sticks 1 by 1

Thanks for the tips FunkLord. I'll give it a shot. I hope the hard drive isn't faulty since it is only three months old.

JDex, as a matter of fact aside from the hard drive itself being relatively new, the only new hardware is a Logitech G15 keyboard I got for xmas. It is USB driven and has illuminated keys as well as a small LCD screen. I was thinking that maybe the psu now doesn't have enough juice to power everything? Although the keyboard has been hooked up for almost three weeks before the reboots happen.

I am also bringing in a paranormal team in to check for poltergeists.

It is entirely possible that it is virus related or some OS corruption as well... so if those solutions don't help a system wipe may be in order.

If you do so, consider picking up ghost and after getting your system locked down the way you like it (and up-to-date) ghost it... then it's a simple matter should you fae another similar issue.

Hope you find the culprit quickly.

Good idea about using Ghost, JDex. I'll definitely do that once everything is back to normal.

Have you checked in the side of your system for leaky or bulging capacitors? Also, have you check the lithium battery? Sometimes the contacts to the can get either 'worn' or just lose continuity altogether, forcing the PC to 'hickup' as yours sounds like here.
