i am making a baltic 147 sailboat and have made the whole thing so far from a box and and have ben making it into but i dont realy know what to do with the sails and cables

What software package are you using? Maya Cloth would work pretty well for the sail--otherwise maybe try NURBS curves. (I only have experience with Maya, so I'm not sure what the other major packages have for cloth sims.)
