View Full Version : Surface tools big problem:(( help!
Nacho Nachev 11-29-2002, 01:10 PM I am trying to make an object just to test surface tools ,but when I apply surface modifier holes appears in the object .When I turn on "flip normals" on, another side of object in hole :(( . I am newbie in 3ds max .so what is the problem ???? please someone explain to me how to model (the rules of surface tools) .please. thanks.

There's a checkbox called "Remove Interior Patches". Tick it.

No, it's not this. The object remains incomplete, in some places there are holes.

The rule of surface tools is:you cant make any patch more than 4 sides.
And make sure the vertexs at the cross are well fused,or you can increase the threshold under surface mod.

all is well fused, but i have been posted 2 pictures one with "flip normals"-on and second with "flip normals" -off BUT they don't match.when is off the one part of object is like empty ,when is on the other part of object is empty!!!! what to do??? help....

Post a picture of your spline cage.
What Iain suggested (turn off interior patches), really should've worked...
Of course, the other option (just to be quick, not a real solution) is to apply a material with the '2 Sided' box checked in it... (i.e : force 2-sided)

here is wireframe(sorry for bad quality). I use cap hole too.

Hi!
I'm just constructing a similar thing on my 3ds max.
Wait a mitute, please... :)

Well,
should it look like this:
BTW: It's my own 5-Min-creation

Part of the surface's fliped?
I had encountered this problem .That sucks.
I guess that' cause by bad spline older or construct.Add an edit patch mod and filp the faceS,or you need to rebuild the cage.
force 2 sided checkbox in render...

Post the file as an attachment and I'll fix it for you.

Now I really am curious. That spline cage you posted shouldn't work like that, since the big round area has 7 or 8 sides. Max shouldn't patch that.
To be continued...

Here's what you are trying to do. Have a lookee at the file and figure out what's different from your's.

Well, I'd like to have a lookie at the file... :bounce: :applause:
Thanks!

So,
You'll have to fuse two vertices, otherwise you'll have to turn your threshold higher ;)

surface tools are a total waste of time.
wanna spend hous adjusting tangency at EVERY vertex intersection?? go fo it bro. the rest of us just use subdiv, regular poly modeling, or break out nurbs if you have to.
the key is to abstaract surface controls, not reduce it down to a vertex by vertex 4 way tangency clusterfrick
muahahahaha

Hi!
You actually don't need to atach the "Cap Holes".
