View Full Version : Unigraphics -> Maya ?
(B-HOLM) 11-29-2002, 10:30 AM I'm gonna do this animation where I need some objects from Unigraphics, but the thing is that when I export to IGES then the model isn't as "clean" as when it's in UniG....does anybody have any tips or any knowledge on this? I can't be the only one on this forum that have had this kind of assignment :shrug:

from my experince uni graphic's iges files are the best *flavour* to import into maya i haven't found a format better.
Here is some stuff you can try;
Export as vrml
Import the iges file into studio tools then save as wire file and import into maya
Get cadfix to clean up the model (expensive but it works)
Export a stp file out of unigraphic's import into studio tools then save as wire file and import into maya.
I also know alias are doing a bunch of cad -> maya/studio importers i dunno when they will be realesed.
Hope that helps

When you say it's not clean, do you mean that the edges just don't match up when you render?

the edges isn't as smooth in Maya as in UniG and some of the little holes become square...that's what I mean with unclean....but Ithink we've exported some rather ok parts now, but if there's some troubles along the way I'll update this thread :)

sounds like you just need to turn up the tesselation(turn up smooth edge and turn on the overrides). Cad packages use alot of trims, so the edges arent always clean by default in maya's renderer.

The thing is unigraphic's etc is a solids modeler so it handles things abit different to maya which is a surfacer, we do heaps ! of data translation and this is a pretty common problem alot of the time its just better to remodel the stuffed parts.
Also maya tesselates this a hell of alot less in real time then most cad packages, so do some test renders you may find things arn't as bad as they seem.
