View Full Version : need info on finding an cartoonist
video567 11-29-2002, 05:28 AM hi all i have an idea for a animation project that i eventually want to make into 3d. i have some characters that i have created in "Writting" but i can not draw people. how would i go about finding someone that could probably read the description of my characters whatthey wear look like etc and maybe draw them fr me.. im sure i would have to pay someone to create the people. It's not a commercial product although you never know what could happen in the future. the personality and the stoy i have is copyright by me but i know if someone draws them for me even if i pay them they would have some control.. i just need more info on all this subject. if anyone has any info please email me or post here. there may be others looking for the same information

thanks for posting.. im still looking for information but ill keep you in my work ledger.. like you said "pay me if you want or not but obviously if anything ever happened ...well you know" thats the thing i dont know! :)
Im sure for the future i need to protect my self and the artist.
I got kinda used a few years back i made a logo for a club and a t-shirt then a year later i move out of the state when i go check up on the club they where selling t-shirts with my logo i created and never saw a credit for the work or any moneys..
I wasn't upset much but i worked 3 days on it and it would have been nice to see my name on the site with credit to the work....
i dont want to do that to someone else.
I also do not want my family to get sued in 50 years when i die because they find all my work and sell it for millions of dollars and some one comes up and says it was their creation :surprised haha i wish but you get my meaning.
BTW i went to the link on you msn group page and it doesnt work
thanks again
If your worried about someone stealing your ideas or not giving proper credit to the finished product, then your best bet is to get a work agreement signed before you have the cartoonist do any work. This way you can stipulate who has what rights to the finished product.
If the pay is right, the artist could sell you all of his legal rights to the images, and they won't have any interest (legal interest, not personal interest) in the product after they get their check. Most professionals are familiar with working under this type of agreement.
A non-disclosure agreement is also helpful to keep the artist from sharing information about your project before it is ready for the market.
Do your homework and you won't get burned.

How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book by Tony C. Caputo
Although it deals with comic books, it does have some good sample contracts or work agreements. A good portion of the book deals with working with freelancers.
