View Full Version : 19 inch widescreen or fullscreen monitor?
Baron Underbite 01-12-2006, 06:08 PM Which would be better for maya?
I heard widescreen monitors give more space to work with, but the top is also cut off.
Can anyone help me out?

I use 20" flat panel monitor, with 1680x1050 resolution, one CRT with similarly high resolutions. Maya on the flat panel, hypergraph/etc on the CRT. I haven't noticed any top cutting off issues...

i have a 17inch widescreen laptop screen, with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, the widescreen is great especially with maya, there is no top cutting off issues.

a 19" widescreen vs a 19" normal LCD typically has a lower resolution in the height factor, meaning less screen estate.eg:
1680x1050 notice the 1050, not the usual 1200.
Mathematically 1600 pixels x 1200 pixels is 156000pixels more room than 1680x1050 that is generally what people are referring to.
Personal preference really, you ought to go to a store and compare the two. The significance is MASSIVE on screens lower than 19" when worker within applications that like room.
Personal preference really. If you don't mind working in maya at 1680x1050, then go for it.
It's probably a higher resolution than what you're working on now...

I have two rigs:
--> nr1: dual LaCie photonVision II 20" (1600*1200)
This works great with Maya. This setup is great for UV mapping etc. I feel it's better to have two monitors like that. Hypershade etc. is also good for this setup.
-->nr2: one 23" HP widescreen (1920*1200) with a 19" HP (1280*1024). Maya expands over the pixels on the widescreen beatifully. However this setup is a bit chopped because of the small second monitor. With two 23" widescreen this would probably be different.
Actually I'm not sure if I'd go for wide or not. If I were to buy a single monitor and only planned on working with maya I'd probably buy a widescreen. If I were to buy the rig for maya and gaming/other media I'd probably stick with the regular screen... But I'm addicted to dual setup now so I'd rather have two regular LCDs than one widescreen. Make sure you get a decent resoulution though. 1600+

I have a widescreen at 1920 x 1200.. i had 2 fullscreens before.. and i prefer the widescreen setup more.. If you go widescreen id recommend using Nvidia cards.. the grid editor is really nice feature for cutting the screen up when you want to.

I have two fullscreen 19 inch LCD monitors, each at 1280x1024.
I gain no more resolution over a 17 inch LCD, but it is easier to see small text, tiny icons, etc. My eyes had already deteriorated too much for comfort so I decided to get the larger screen, but NOT higher res. I am extremely thankful I did this.
If you work very long hours on your screen, I say give my way a shot.
