Man am I stupid, I didnt describe the technique, Sorry.

Here goes,

Decide the general shape of the oject.
Select that faces that you want to use as the "cage". Hide them.
Select all faces. Delete faces. (NOT VERTECIES). Unhide. Then extrude. Escape. Then AltS.

That should be it.

Sorry...

Just tried your tech out. Really neat. I think that perhaps it could be formulated to a script. I am not much of a scripter but perhaps someone could do it.

It would help less experienced users if you added some pictures to your tutorial or made a flash tutorial with Wink.

You could also mention about the use of mirror modifiers in the tutorial. I think that they might suit your tech well.

That wasnt a tut. That was just the description. I will start making a tut. And then post the link here when im done. Wink... Ill have to look into that. Ive never used Wink before. Ill have a look.

About scripting, I was thinking that aswell. Im not a scripter. I havent writen any. Although due to the fact that there are so few steps, I dont think one would we needed.

Mirror modifiers? Now im completely lost. Maybe someone could point me in the rigth direction and then I could incorporate it into the tut.

Thanks

Have you seen this script?

http://members.iinet.net.au/~cpbarton/ideasman/wire_mesh.py

from

http://members.iinet.net.au/~cpbarton/ideasman/ ?

It renders the wires as soldi objects, and I believe gives you control too over their thickness and such.

Mirror modifiers? Now im completely lost. Maybe someone could point me in the rigth direction and then I could incorporate it into the tut.
Here's info about modifiers. (http://blender.org/cms/Modifier_System.681.0.html)

You could make a mesh so that you model only a small part of it. Mirror takes care of the rest. This is very useful when you are modeling symmetric objects.

How to set up simple mirroring:
1. Make a cube.
2. Add mirror modifier and set it to x.
3. Move the cube one unit right (hit ctrl as you move it)

You can add more modifiers to the stack. When you want to turn the mirror into real mesh, hit apply at the modifier.

Oh right. Now I see what you mean.

I didnt actually use that. But I guess I could.

NeOmega: Yes. Ive seen it before. But thats not quite whats happening here. (Sorry if thats not what you mean)

Ill do the tutorial with Wink tomorow.

And I have some ideas for the technique I want to try.....

Quite interesting, but it is easy to get confused in this part:
Now press W and select "Select swap". Then pres H to hide the faces. What you see now is a bit of a preview of what your end result be.

If youre not happy with this cage, then press Alt H. Then W again and Select swap. The make the changes you want and preview it again. If you are happy with what you have, then make sure you have your cage selected the way you want it. Then swap selected faces (W and select swap remember?). Delete the faces. Make sure you deleted the faces and not the verticies. It should now look like your preview.

A lot of selection swapping and face hidding/unhidding.. maybe it could be written in a more straight-forthward way.. just a suggestion.

BTW, I just noticed that the loop select isn't on the select menu

"If youre not happy with this cage, then unhide the hidden faces (press Alt H). Then swap selected faces (W again and Select swap). Then make the changes you want and preview it again.

If you are happy with what you have, make sure you have your cage selected the way you want it (Youll need to unhide the faces you hid for this to work). Then swap selected faces (W and select swap remember?) so that the cage is the only thing NOT selectected. Delete the faces (IMPORTANT: Make sure you deleted the faces and not the verticies). It should now look like your preview. "

Is that better?

Thanks..

Clear to me, I will try the technique myself as soon as I have time. Agree that the hiding and unhiding and all the select swapping might confuse new users, but most people should be able to figure it out, very creative anyway!

The reason I used the swap seected vertecies in the first place was becuase there was a little bug in blender (Which has now been fixed in 2.41) that made things even more comlpicated. But now you can just hide them.

Like this :

" Select that faces that you want to use as the "cage". Hide them.
Select all faces. Delete faces. (NOT VERTECIES). Unhide. Then extrude. Escape. Then AltS."

Previously you couldnt extrude the faces after the unhide. You had to tb in and out or so,ething similar. But tis fixed now. (thanks ton!!)"
