I have imported my illustrator file in after effects as a still image, now I add an stroke effect but that doesnt have any effect, are there other options to control the stroke width of my imported illustrator art?

AFAIK Stroke only works on Masks / Paths (closed or unclosed). Select a path in Illustrator -> CTRL+C, switch to AE, hit CTRL+V and try if you can apply stroke this.

yeah I'm able to do that with masks but only with simple strokes, my object are several circles put together, when I'm pasting that as object my stroke gets broken
