Hmm. Free, I dont know. If that is not mentioned, it might not be anymore...
Had fun playing around with the 1.0 version. Straight forward interface and realistic paint/brush physics.

I've been fooling around with the beta, and oh my gosh you guys, this program is so slick. :)
In my understanding there's going to be a free limited edition or trial edition, and a small fee (think in the $20 range) for a full registered version. They really want to make it free but they just can't afford to this time around.

Wow, this is great news. I was hoping they would continue to develop it. When I downloaded Artrage 1, I thought "If it only supported layers, I would use it regularly". Now, it does...plus a host of other great enhancements
When's the official launch?

Dang. I hate to comment before trying it out, but with features like rotating canvas and textured brushes, and a price point of only $20. It really looks like this could give Sketchbook a run for its money... we'll see I suppose.
Release the demo already!

I should probably hurry up and clarify here that $20 is only my own speculation. What I was actually told as far as fees were concerned were that the cost would be "so small that it would be stupid not to register," or words very close to those.
I'll point them at this thread and maybe we can have somebody more reliable than myself providing information. :)

Okay! I just talked to them and I have confirmation that the registered version is going for $19.95 US monies and I've also been asked to note that the free version will have all the features of AR1, with the faster, more accurate, and more realistic tools, and a couple of new bits of technology. There will still be a free non-crippled version that's better than AR1.
I've also been quoted an estimate for the release date but have been asked not to repeat it. But it's, uh, really soon. :)

Have you tried Open Canvas before? It has a water color brush that is pretty similar to Painter's Simple Water brush. The most recent version is 4 but you can get version 1 for free online. http://www.warpaint.se/

Thanks for the heads up, just trying 1.1 now and I'm loving it's simplicity. I don't draw, used to as a child but long lost my drawing skills, blown away by how easy this is to use, just chucked a lo-res photo of mine as tracing paper and started doodling...
Roll on the v2 and money is handed over ASAP, I'm looking forward to getting into doodling once again :D

Are you using a multi-monitor setup? I remember this happened in the old (pre-1.1) release of Artrage, but got fixed with 1.1. I wonder if it got somehow reintroduced/missed?
Anyways, the feature list looks awesome. Downloading the free version, though considering how much I enjoyed the relatively limited first version, I'm likely to cough up for the full version (at $20! bloody amazing pricepoint).
edit:
Wow. It is a lot faster. The new pencils are nice, too, as is the new interface. However, the thing that well and truly impresses me is the fact that rotating the canvas results in zero appreciable loss in perceived image quality. None. Whatsoever. I don't believe I've tried another app that doesn't reduce the perceived image quality at least a little when the canvas is rotated. Using a tablet PC, though, so rotating the canvas isn't quite as important to me, but it's still impressive nontheless. Definitely going to spring for the full version.

Hi there, I just wanted to drop a note to the forum that we've received a couple of reports of problems, one with a Cintiq and one with a multi-monitor setup. We're gathering info on it at the moment and we'll get a patch out when we're sure we've fixed the problem. While we tested it in a couple of multi-monitor situations, it's possible that something slipped past us and we'll see if we can track it down.
As a side note, I have replicated a problem with the cursor being offset when a Wacom tablet is running in mouse mode. While we fixed a problem that prevented ArtRage using custom mapping of the tablet to the screen, that one managed to get by us, but the fact that we can replicate it means we can fix it!
In the meantime, if you have any data you'd like to pass on regarding symptoms, send it direct to me (matt@ambientdesign.com) and I'll get on to it. I guess this post will take some time to appear given that it has to be validated, but we're watching :)
Thanks!

Great upgrade! version 1's oils were too slow compared to Painter, but now they are snappy! Can anyone tell me if theres a way to get an effect like the watercolors in Painter? Or simply a brush with pressure sensitive opacity? I haven't found anything yet in the free version.

sweet update, well worth it.
there are still a couple of things i wish it had, like the ability to link tablet tilt to the tilt angle of the pencil, and i'd love to have some sort of control for overall tablet pen pressure sensitivity. also i'm still thinking that pencils should multiply together rather than cover.

Great program. However, I'm running my Cintiq 21 as my second monitor. Everytime I 'maximize' the app on the Cintiq display it disapears. I can get it back from the taskbar using 'restore window' but then without the menu bar and as a smaller window.
It's not liking my Cintiq as a second monitor. Don't have this problem with Sketchbook 2.0 ( or Photoshop etc) so I know thing are setup properly.

I get this too with my dual monitor setup. If I drag the Artrage window to my second monitor and max it, it dissappears. Actually it minimizes to my taskbar. After I klick it, it maximizes to my second monitor.
It would be nice if you could drag the menus to the second monitor :)

At least you get it to maximize. I get nothing. Works great on my primary monitor.
I can't believe no one noticed this problem during testing. Hopefully a fix will be forthcoming as it looks like it would be great if I could actually use it full screen on my Cintiq.
At least you have a Cintiq :D
Sorry to hear that rgwarren.
I noticed another small thing.
When I flip my wacom pen the eraser work fine, but it would be nice if the erasertool settings would appear everytime you flip the pen to erase something.
But man, what a nice update!

Yep. I am experiencing the same thing here. I have to drag ArtRage from Monitor 1 to the Cintiq and then drag it to full-screen size. Trying to maximize it simply causes it to minimize to the task bar (and I have one on the second monitor ... the Cintiq ... because I am running UltraMon) and I cannot get it back by clicking on it.
I made a drawing and the file had 2 layers. I kept the bottom layer empty and did the drawing on the top layer.
It seems that when you save to psd, you need to have something on each layer.
Otherwise Photoshop can't read the layers and Painter refuses to open the file.

Man, I am so impressed with version 2, well worth the money. I've never had a program that you could learn in half-an-hour yet have enough power to do high-end work with it, which ArtRage certainly feels capable of. The other thing I like is that it's the first program that really feels like I'm using traditional media with it, granted, I haven't used Painter much, but for the price it's amazing. I find myself already excited to what they'll do with it in the future, I'd love to see what they could do with watercolors or pastels. Five stars for sure!
Just want to throw in my praise.
Artrage 1.1 had already been a very important tool for me as I relied on freeware and it was the only one I could use with good looking natural media and a performance good enough for high-res!
The new version still manages to keep its simplistic intuitive interface while introducing many fine features.
Rotating the canvas rocks!
I think I will eventually buy it (need to recover from a painter purchase first), for the following reasons:
- layers
- resizing canvas (god how scary it was (and is, with the free version of AR2) to paint and know:"it has to fit the canvas otherwise I'm screwed...")
- so many new tools
- 20 bucks is almost nothing
So, congratulations on a fantastic tool (for a price that is actually unilateralism on the front line of pirate copying...)

is this program better than painter?
If it suits your needs better. Some might say it is, others definitely will not. I personally think that at the price, it's a good place to start and if Painter offers something that you need (as in worth the price tag)... you can get Painter also.

I just tried the free version...didn't like it very much..prolly stick to photoshop.
I think it's better than Painter. It's more simple and direct than Painter, and to me seems faster and more responsive. Can't really think what Painter features I would need.
I think in the next few months you'll see finished work created in ArtRage that will look no different in finish and quality to the stuff created in Painter.

I've always used Photoshop as my primary painting tool, although I would occasionally import work into Painter to add some natural media touches. Painter is a sophisticated tool that I never bothered to learn in-depthly. So, from my perspective, ArtRage2 is a perfect alternative. It takes no time to learn, the brush response rate is fast, it interprets paint behavior much like real-world paints and it's very affordable.
I really hope Ambient continues to develop this product.

Hi all,
Earlier on in the thread I said we were looking in to some of the problems people have been having with ArtRage on Cintiqs and dual monitors, and PSD issues. While I apologise for cluttering the thread with a request, we've got a patch ready for testing and I'm looking for someone with a Cintiq who would be willing to try it out. The one we managed to source here is working, but you never know if someone else's setup is different! If anyone's been using ArtRage and is interested in testing it out, please drop me a line at matt@ambientdesign.com.

Yeah, I work with PS7 and even with that, I have had issues with saving my work. It's a drag, but I usually export as a .bmp file. It flattens it, but I generally work on a flat PS file anyhow. Hopefully, they will continue to make improvements with ArtRage. Despite its shortcomings, it's still a great product.

It does that when you use pencils on clear canvas. But if you coat canvas using pen or paint roller (better, but free version does not have this), palette knife on pencil strokes works much better.

Palette Knife: We reworked the Palette Knife to improve smearing and blending quality.
Dry Brushing: Added a 'Dry Brush' function. When you take the Oil Brush or Paint Roller Loading to 0% the tool applies no paint, you can use it to blend existing paint as if it was clean.
Quick Mirror Check: Added a 'Quick Mirror' function that allows you to do a quick 'mirror check' of your painting. Holding down the H key flips your painting horizontally, holding down the V key flips it vertically. When you release the key, the painting returns to its normal orientation. This function is for people who like to be able to do mirror checks of their work to check for structural problems.
Background Colour: You can now change the background colour used by ArtRage. If your canvas is smaller than the ArtRage window, select the colour you want and Alt/Option-Click the background. The default colour is white.
Painting Name: Added the name of your current painting to the titlebar of the ArtRage window.
Spacebar Move & Rotate: The Spacebar can now be used to move the canvas. Hold the spacebar down and left click/drag to move the canvas. When you release the spacebar, your selected tool will work again. To rotate the canvas, hold down the spacebar then the Alt/Option key and left click/drag the canvas.
Multi-User Support: Changed how ArtRage stores its registration and user preference information so that multiple user accounts on one machine will have easier access to the application.
Larger Tool Sizes: Added the ability to 'oversize' tools. When you single click the tool size preview you are prompted to enter a percentage value for the tool size. You can now manually enter sizes up to 500%. You can stil only use the standard size preview slide functionality to reach 100%, but some users had requested larger tools. Please note, you may experience some unusual behaviour in tools over 100%, we do not suggest using this feature unless you are working on extremely large documents.

Sweet! Great update...love the drybrush! The spacebar is also a great addition, simple but effective.

The new updates are great, especially the dry brush and the flipping function. I would have never thought there would be enough room for another painting program, but I find myself using Art Rage more and more. A very cool app which I hope they keep improving upon.
Another update available.
ArtRage Full Version 2.11 Update
This solves the alt+spacebar rotate problem.
