Ok.. i got a simple yet complicated project i desire to do.

You know those Square blocks that contain hundreds of small pins that move forward and back, so that you can put your hand into them and they show on the otherside the impression of your hand? I'm sorry for such a weird description.. but i've got no idea what their called.. if i did i'd also give examples. But long story short, i need to make one. If you dont know what it is, think of it like i need to make 1000 Little Pins with a head on them, then i wish to assign those a path to which they can only move..

Ok, now that i have the 1000 pins i wish to push them point to form a shape... any shape.. but the pins that were all aligned will now have some pushed out more than others, giving a shape obviously.

man this is such a weird description.. but given what little you understand of what i just said.. can you help at all? Help as far as what tools i can be using, etc. Simple stuff like:

1.) How can i mass produce these "Pins" in a grid like fashion, then later on be able to indepentantly control them so they don't all move as one big object.

2.) Are booleans even worth looking into for the pin holes, the holes that the pins go through? ( The pins are all held together by a flat plain with holes for them to move through ).

3.) help... me.. *falls over from confusion..

lol thanks to any and all help you can provide. And to the few of you who know what their called please post pictures or names so i can post pictures for others to get what i am saying.

Thanks! ( if i could show you what it looked like i could simply ask how do i make THIS lol )

"Pin Art" is what those things are referred to. The array tool will give Hundreds of pins in a grid. I have not had much luck with the current Boolean tools in modo yet.

Argh.... forget about using a boolean function to punch the holes. There are much better ways to do this. One would be to create a grid with the amount pin-holes you're after in vertices contained within the grid (so excluding border verts.). Select all those (inner) verts and bevel them. This will basically create a quad poly for every vert. you had selected. Now you can select these newly created quads and extrude them out into tubes. I'm sure you can see by now where I'm going with this. For the placement of your pins, you could use the array tool as zeusbwr suggests.
Check the luxology forums... I think there was mention of this technique in more detail.
