hey there..
maybe someone of you might be able to explain this maya behaviour.. for what i see it is a deep buried bug but maybe there is an idea behind it?

see the image..

two shaders, both use a file to drive the color gain of a fractal that is connected to a bump.

the left render is what i expect, but the right one really sucks.. that is not what i expect and not what the preview in the hypershade makes me expect..

anyone an idea why that happens?

i think the bug is in the file node, sice the same thing seems to work with other 2d textures.

cheers

even funnier:

i had a friend render it in maya 4.5 with menatal ray.. and see the result :surprised

I just tried it here and it works fine in maya 4.0 and 4.5.

Can you post the file here on cgtalk? If you save it as a .ma you can probably compress it into a zip small enough to fit into 50k.

Hi,

Do You have an Alpha-Channel in Your File-Texture ?

Well,
maybe itīs a logical thing.

If a texture is black and you "add" white, the texture will get lighter.
But if you invert the texture and it will be white, it canīt get whiter than full white.

I honestly donīt know if it should get lighter or darker. try to map the out of the invert-node to color offset instead of color gain.

Hope it helps
