View Full Version : Modelling a "welded" metal look

I have a pipe and then I have another pipe that extrudes out of it's side. Rather than just taking two cylinders and attaching together or using the crappy booleans (and don't suggest Power Booleans please) how can merge them together and cleanly chamfer the intersection or something else for this look?

I'd do it with Subds: Instead of using cylinders, you could have the main pipe just be a long box: Add two edge loops where you want the other to connect to it, and then extrude out along one of the sides where the other pipe should be coming out (so you basically have a long box, with another one extruded out of its side). You'll probably have to play around with the edge loops to get it right, but it should work once a couple meshsmooth iterations are applied.
As far as the actual welded look of the connection, that might be done with just a touch of displacement where the two pipes come together. Bump mapping might even be enough, too.

Here's another idea too (adding weld geometry):

Jeff, that is exactly what I was trying to achieve and such an easy way! Thanks!

I've never used Subds before but perhaps now is time to get my hands dirty with it ;)

Vormav,

Forgive my ignorance but I was trying to do your method and don't know what exactly you mean by creating "edge loops" with the box. Could be a little more specific?
