View Full Version : Shouldn't this give me a b&w bump map (from normalmap)? *pic*
Niber 01-07-2006, 08:52 AM http://www.niber.net/3d/normal-error.jpg
I think it should, the normalize only is for making a normal map into a bumpmap AFAIK,
but it doesn't, when I press ok, the filter appears in the history/undo-list, but the picture looks exactly the same.
Anyone have any idea why?

try the "Convert to height" option
if it doesnt work, use this: displacementmap creator (http://66.70.170.53/Ryan/heightmap/heightmap.html)
"normalisize only" just fits your normalmap into the normalmapping standards

That doesn't work either :(
That displacement converter half-works though :)
but sadly it seems to scale down it to 512x512, but that's good enough for now I guess.

go to :
Image > adjustments > Desaturate.
then to alter the b&w image, go to Image > adjustments > levels.
hope that helps.

why? :S
I could also find a red marker pen and go outside and write a X on 3 random stones but that would also not accomplish anything :P

you say the convert to height option "doesnt work", does that mean you're not even getting a greyscale image?
and i dont see anything wrong with r_mc_gowan's option. it just requires lots of tweeking

I had a problem with the "convert to height" option not working also. For some reason it would crash PS wheneverI tried it

It (convert to height option) just erase all the info on the layer and leaves it to nothing.
Hm I just don't see how that would turn into a hieghtmap :S

this may be complete sillyness, as I've not tried it, but what about trying to get info from just the blue channel, and using levels to fill it out and make a bump?

I've never used this utility (pretty much because it doesn't exist for mac users :surprised ) but I'm curious as to what the "add height to normal map" checkbox would do for you, and then see about using the blue channel as Confracto suggested. or maybe using the "add height to normal map" with the "convert to height"
but like I said, I've never used this before, I'm just going off of what you have in your screengrab, and what's been said already.

The blue channel is wierd becouse it's like a hieghtmap but in a weird way, but since it's similair to a standard bump/hieght map sure you could probebly manually tweak it to look like a real bump/hieght map.

The blue channel is much more a "Am I parallel to the mesh normal?" information rather than "how far is this pixel from me?". Generate a normal with the plugin with a white pattern on black background, then observe the blue channel. If it was a height information originals black and white area would be different colors, since one is deeper than the other. But both will appear white and only the transition area will be gray. This is not rigourously scientific but tend to be a clear explanation :)

there are the min Z and the scale option, i think you should put up the scale to 12, check invertx and invert y and use the convert to hight again
then it maybe gives some results

Niber - I had some problems before using this plugin on a layer image. (just like you the result was a empty layer)
Try to use it on a background image to see if it works. It did for me.
Hope it helps.
