View Full Version : Speed Racer ... thing
Paul G 01-07-2006, 03:53 AM G'day all,
It has been a while since I posted last. I haven't really had a chance to do my own stuff since I got a job. Thought I'd get back into it and start up a new demoreel and maybe get my website off the ground.
This is still W.I.P

It needs a bit of optimising and I will eventually add a proper interior and mounted weapon.

nice shapes fella. this'll be great with some more attention. i have some suggestions, but they're only suggestions so take em how you like.
i reckon this guy would probably roll on it's first high speed corner. the centre of gravity is too high for the width of the wheel base. i'd angle the beam that runs from the cockpit to the back wheels out, so the cockpit sits lower. i'd also try and widen the wheel base. this could be achieved by either spacing the wheels away from the arms, or putting a little space between the arms and the cockpit (or both). basically, lower and wider equals faster and more stable.
maybe these shots are what it looks like when it's parked, and it animates down and out when you get up some speed. like some kind of ppost apocalyptic citroen hydrolic system. now i'm just rambling.
keep it coming
Cheers

i really love it! i want to see it textured with both shiny and rusted-post apocalyptic look in one!
I agree with the above comments and also, how does it turn? i cant see how the front wheels would turn...
I really love this one more updates :D

Thanks guys for the kind words and awesome advice.
obelisk: Thats actually not a bad idea. I'm thinking of adding in some hydrolics in the sides so that when it speeds up it spreads out. I will be implementing those ideas soon.
GLandolina: thx mate, I was thinking that the rear wheels will steer the car just for something different (plus i cant think of a good way for the front tires to turn). I am leaning towards the post-apocalyptic texture but not sure yet.
maul: thx mate, I'll keep em coming... (if work doesn't take up too much time)

shot of the interior: I didnt want to put in a steering wheel so I'm going with these 2 joysticky things for something different.

I updated the tires and modelled the interior. I'm still not happy with the rear wheels, the control handles and the chair. I will revisit it later, coz I've had it for today. The polycount is 3950 so far, a bit high for what I planned but I have been generous and chamfer crazy.

try not to sound so damn surprised! nice to see another aussie here BTW.
looking good Paul G. the headrest seems a little small and mundane given the rest of the design and the seat could do with some attention. take a look at these seats (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=307300) for inspiration.
can't wait to see your hydraulic and steering solutions (no pressure...)
keep it coming.

....cool looking car but it kinda looks like it would be hard to get into
It isn't easy getting in a race car either, you have to climb in through the window.. I really like this design it looks so aggresive :)

Looking forward to seeing some textures on there and I hope you sort out the steering issue ;)

i like it, dont like the idea of rear wheel steering though, they turn on a dime, but this would tip, oh so easy, id reckomend fatteningup thjose tyres a little too.

The fastest car in the world has/had rear wheel stearing...
I like the design, but where is the engine?

crazy truckers, i was thinking about how, forklift trucks, etc handle, good call on the engine
still think fattening up the tyres would be good.

Just an idea.....
You could also have it like bumper cars do, one lever makes the wheels on the left side turn and the other lever makes the wheels on the right side turn.
hence when one is forward you go forward and one backward you go in reverse.......... you get my point
