Hi all,

I have to do a scene at sea.
I work on Maya. Here is a test I did this today.
I anyone nows what technics I can use to make some nice waves at the stem ?

boat in waves (http://michel.cavro.free.fr/wip/Scene4_test3.mov) (Qtime 2meg)

I thought of either particles or an animated NURBS with a moving texture on it.

i would use particles, im not very strong in maya, but i know in max's particle system this would be easlity achieved.

You may be right Brandon, I'll will try that and post the result :bounce:

I just thought I'd add a picture of the clip. It's a bit dark though !

Hi there! Shame on me - didn't see the link in your sig.

Wow - this looks really great! So nice texture and motion for the water - very good!
Is it part of a bigger project? Is it a personal one or for a client?

I'd love to sea more :)

Hi!

Sea is dark when deep, but you can change the colors in the ocean shader, add transparency if you want to see the bottom, etc.
Also you might want to have a sky ;) that would work better I think :D

"sea more" hahahahaha ! Even with my french accent I got that ! Very good Gunilla.
Couldn't wait to spam hu ? I like that and it's always an honnor to get one from you ! (Lolo will be jealous  ).
It is part of a video clip that I'm doing with some friends and we can't really say much more about it, but when it's out, we all make a party for it and invite our friends to see it in different countries !

Stay tuned !

By the way ... you don't happen to know how to make waves in front of my boat or foam at the trail ?

Merci Maxime,
Yeah, you're right , but I totally forgot to work on that :D . I will correct it right away.
My concern is for the waves at the stem or foam in the trail ... aarrrggghhhh can't find the tool :banghead:

The pond works better for waves and the trail (interaction between the boat and the surface of the ocean). But it's a smaller surface. Well I never dug these fluid effects so I can't tell you more.

Good luck!

Yep... I'm here to mate...

Glad to see your boat back again... with a great sea... totally agree with Maxime about sky... that can change all... and change for better... I'm waiting update now...

In the movie, there's especially one thinh which disturb me, the boat seem to rotate only on one axis... but maybe it's an optical illusion...

Continue like that Scooty... and take care in the bath :scream: hahaha

Hahahahaha ! How did you now I was doing my tests in the bath ?

I am adding a sky for the next text ... it gives a quite different mood to the scene but we don't concentrate as much on the boat.

Laurent, you're right, I will add a second axe, and as Gunnila suggested, I have to shake those sails a bit ! :D

I think the stern of the boat needs to bounce above the waves a bit when it gets hit. It sticks to the ocean surface way too much.

Sure looking forward to see the full video - and to attend the party of course!

Sorry..no, I haven't done any water related .. you should check out hssus (Chi-Han Hsu) thread from the challenge - if I remember right, he did some clever tricks for the splashes in his entry - the one with the whale.

Good luck and I will look for updates here for sure!

Thank's man, that's the Celtic POWAAAAAA !!!

Horray!
Yeah no worries dude. The fact that the stern wasn't bursting out of the water on the larger waves made it look like a small toy, instead of a standard size yaught.

I know what you mean Elliot . I was watching last year championship of this class "J80" and at some times, the stern is really "digging" into the wave ... well , I working on those splashes and it looks much better like this.:bounce:
I not finish though !:D

yes, splatches seem to cross the hull... I think it's not very easy to fix that...

Maybe that will be less visible with less reflection on the hull, not ?

Waiting for other axis movement and sails... and the little chick :scream:

The file wont play on my comp for some reason. There's some type of corruption. Odd though, if it works for Lemog.
I redownloaded a few times and the same error :(

It's not a software issue. Must be something wrong with the net connection, musn't be dloading the full file. Nevermind, I'll try again later.

im not too sure what your using for the splashes.. but yeah like you said your not happy with them, i can see why.
i like i said im not too strong with maya's particle system, but im thinking you could write a script that declares a threshold between the boat and water. (i.e. the further the boat dips the more particle splash up into the boat.)
anywho my 2 cents :) looking cool though

thanks metinicus (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=191738) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2969890", true); , I appreciate your crit !
I am actually using a textured NURBS to create this effect. I felt it was less trouble and less processor consuming this way. I tried to fix this today and right now it 's calculating... waiting for the result !:scream:

I did try to get the splashes right but now I understand what I am doing wrong :wise:

By the way ... who suggested a another axis of movement ? Hmmmmm ? Someone that probably watches the sailboats from his bedroom window in Bezanne, maybe ? By the way here is the Chick : :scream:

About the movement of the boat, it's really better... splatches always cross the hull... and the reflection is always to hard and very disturbing...

...and I doesn't see anything by my room window... just a view in the bakery court :scream:

I'm must acknoledge to waiting impatiently the next version, the final one... then, the perfect one

Impressive mate... really... near to the perfection... the only last things which disturb me are sometimes the water inside the boat... but maybe it's a choice ?
and that perhaps need something less static for sails...

...go to the "poulette" now Scooty :buttrock:

For the water, are you talking about the wave in the back cocpit?
for the sails, I agree, it is still a bit static (but it's moving!)

We had the same teatcher :banghead: :scream: . About the wather in the boat, euuuuh "After effect" ?
You have a very good point here.
I know, it was difficult for me to choose but the sea needed to be strong and I am going to fix two point of vue on the clip that doesn't show too much this wave.

The better solution of course if you can't solve that directly in Maya... you can render the boat animation without the water and composite a mask of the rear part when the water risk to be visible...

If you can... but the compositing solution permit you to have the best point of vue...
