Hi,

I have a object which stands on a poly plane. When rendering I would like to see the shadows from the object on the plane, but not the plane itself.

The shadows should be "flowing in the air" so to speak.

Setting the shader on the plane to transparent makes the shadow transparent aswell. (logically anough).

How do I do this?

Im going to jump in on this too. Coincidentally, I just ran into the exact same problem while rendering out a walk cycle this afternoon. Im using Final Gather and I want to produce an alpha channel that only keeps my character and the shadow underneath him. Im pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to do it.

Anyway, if I find out before someone posts here, Ill let you know.

I just found it. I dont think it works with final gather though. You have to have actual lights in your scene. But anyway, you have to go into the hypershade and assign the plane that is receiving the shadow the "Use Background" shader.

Now when you render out the alpha, it will include the alpha of your object and its shadow. If you want just the shadow, just turn off "Primary Visability" in that objects render attributes.
