Three Kings Day falls on January 6, day of the Epiphany. In Mexico, it is then when children receive the majority of their gifts (rather than Christmas).

Three King's Day commemorates the Three Wise Men, Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar, who followed the star to Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

A special Rosca or sweet bread is baked to be eaten on January 6. A small doll which represents the Christ child is baked into the dough. The figure symbolizes the hiding of the child from Herod's army.

Whoever finds the figure in their slice of sweet bread on Three King's Day is obliged to give a party on February 2nd, Candlemas Day, or Día de la Candelaria, offering tamales and atole (a hot, sweet drink thickened with corn flour) to the guests.

Not only in Mexico but all of Latin America and the Caribbean. It is also known as the 3 wise men day as Floyd said.

In Puerto Rico kids leave freshly cut grass and water for the camels (instead of milk and cookies for Santa) the night before. The following morning kids find presents under the tree and the grass and water scattered over the place like if the camels ate and drank :)

The interesting part is that since Puerto Rico is a US commonwealth it has very strong US influence and they celebrate both Christmas and the 3 wise men day.

I once stayed in Spain over Christmas and watched the 3 kings parade which ended in the town square, when there they gave out a main present to each of the young kids by pre arrangement by their parents.
The whole thing was quite magical, hope to go and see it all again one day.

I always knew that St Paddys existed...however I only truely expereinced the true meaning of the day when I was 17. Lets just say that I'm sure it was a night to remember...if I remembered it. :)

By the way it is a Spanish tradition (I think in Italy they also celebrate it ), so thats why all the latin american countries celebrate this great family day.

All the Santa claus thing came from the northern countries, and although it has become very popular in most latin countries the big day for presents is today.

There were just a few kids here, singing in front of my door and saying stuff like "god bless this flat and everyone who's walking in and out" - So I gave them a few bucks and they were happy.

That's interesting, giving the presents in connection to when the 3 kings gave the presents. Makes sense to me.

It's a holyday here in Ireland too... everyone gets the day off and goes to mass in the evenings. My mother always mourned the fact that I was 10 minutes too late to be born on the epiphany... :p
