The mermaid is the first model I done when I started at AAU. It won't be used as a model in my demo but I still like it so I decided to use it as a hardcopy ver.
It looks a bit stiff becasue I wasn't use to pose nurbs models in the beginning. C&C welcome!

Audrey Hepburn?

01-06-2006, 02:04 AM
Dude...it's obviously Audrey Hepburn. I can't believe you would even ask if people could tell! Seriously, great job, and great likeness. Most likenesses I see aren't very good, or just bear a passing resemblance, but this is great. Much better than most I've seen here!!
The only crit I would make is that if you plan to post/animate her, starting with her smiling probably will make it hard to deform correctly.
Other than that, it's far better than I can do, so I can't say anything bad. Rock on!!!

I'm a lttle bored of all these women realistic model but this one is really different. Just wow. She had a real expression and that's the difference. Very best work on eyes and mouth.

Thanks for the comments Oliver:)
Mr, positive: Yes I hope so :)
graphacks: Thank you for the compliment. I think this time I might put a facial expression on a head model :)
authentic: I tried to put a smile on her which makes it very difficult. I might take her smile off if its not good enough.
now I'm trying to make a model worth putting on my portfolio. I have to tweak a lot of the smile and the face, and model the hair. C&C welcome. Please tell me anything where is wrong or weird. thank you.
Jinwoo:)
Great stuff!
Excellent modeling! Love the smile!
she looks like audrey but also reminds a little of sinead oconnor :)
I think u should make her neck shorter

Hey jjcoolio !
Not a lot of C&C except WOW
Eyes are absolutely stunning , so the smile... Geez
Would you mind if I ask you some details about this ?
Like which software did you use ?
If you would be ok to show the lowpoly wireframe ?
What have you planned for the next ? an entire model, texture , pose , anim ?.
Keep up the great work , and can't wait to see your next update .
Cheers, :)

Looks great. I love the smile. It's perfect.
Are you gonna texture it?
Definitely the expression is great, seems very authentic, I'd keep it, or if you intend to animate and want to "blank" the expression *please* save that mesh for a blend, if this is possible (not an animating type)
Instantly recognisable imo, great job

This woman was extremely beautiful in her youth and, as you can see, when she was younger her face was a little bit more filled, giving her a more tender appearance.

Thanks a lot folks! I really appreciate what you wrote.
I will check the areas with the problems and try to fix them.
The model is a nurbs patch model and I had ideas to make the torso so she could hold a cigar or something. If the pose or body is bad then I'm planning to go only with the head.
thank you all for the wonderful comments.
heres the wire of the head. I will soon post a small update soon.

She looks great, but much I like Gene Hackman. He looks fantastic, wery well done :applause:
Not that I'm qualified to have an opinion, but I recognized Audrey Hepburn immediately. Textured the impact would be better, but the likness is definately good.
The gentleman I don't recognize, but that means nothing.

01-08-2006, 08:47 AM
Wow! The Gene Hackman is immediately recognizable! No doubt about that one! That stern look is dead on! Only crit would be that the hair seems too soft and/or not enough cuts or creases. Very little definition. Still awesome work, though!

HOLY HELL, you are an amazing modeler. They look perfect in respects to their real counterparts. When I saw the images right away I knew who they were, it took me a whole 3 seconds to clue in. both Audrey and Gene look great! I think you should soften and smooth her up a bit because the creases on her cheeks and the bumps on the chin and the rest of the face make her look older than she was when the original picture was taken. Still awesome modeling:thumbsup:

truly excellent modeling, and in NURBS! both are instantly recognizable, and you've really captured Audrey in a mesmerizing expression which looks very much alive. top notch stuff! oh, and I would also love to see the nurbs wire for Gene if it's not to much hassle.

Have to agree with everyone else: Very good likenesses of both Gene Hackman and Audrey Hepburn - No doubt as to who either one was right away.
Definately some of the best CG models of famous people I've seen in these forums.
I'm giving you something I rarely if ever give -5 Stars.
Now, hows about a wire of Gene? :bounce:
EDIT-What software(s) do you use?

The people here are right. These are very well done models based on likeness. And to think you actually did it using nurbs patch is truly mind blowing. I wonder why you'd still prefer it to do it that way though, is that still what they teach in your school?
You are definitely one of the better head modelers in this site, and i am looking forward to seeing these textured.

Hello, folks. First, I am very surprised and did not expect such compliments. I just hoped I could get more feedback or comments. (but I am so grateful)
First of all, here's the wire. Sorry its a bit sloppy since I was in a hurry.
(Did some mountain climbing today so I was actually sleeping the rest of the day home.)
For Gene's hair I used a muti resolution junction(so called 'T-junction') in Maya to get some more resolution on the hair. (There could be some ways I could extract some displacement maps created by nurbs patchs like they did on the troll giant in the lord or the ring series. but I guess I'm too lazy to figure out how) The mesh is made to be used as a portfolio piece so I didn't quite mind that it might get a bit heavy).
I am looking forward to use zbrush with polys as well and continue my studies in my last semester.
I think these models put me into a lot of pain and agony since I wanted to create some models which are recognizable to people. When I started to make Gene I was learning how to patch and at the time I was juggling with a couple of models so I don't really can't tell how long it took. (One thing for sure is that I think I could do a faster job in the future.)
btw,our school (AAU)has a nurbs patch modeling class which made me learn the proccess.
I kind of like nurbs since its very light and the data size is very low.(Gene is only 1.7 megas).
I am glad that the models are recongnizable to some folks here and will try to fix the models with the valuable critics and comments you have given me.
I will soon post some of my bad/weak heads I'm really not satisfied to get more feedback and critiques as I go on.Thank you for your feedback and compliments. I am so grateful and will try to do a better job.
Further feedback and critiques are very welcome.

wow, thanks for the wireframe on Gene, again I'm amazed at the intricate skin detailing you've been able to do in nurbs. you mentioned T-Junction, when I searched on it I found this:
http://www.tsplines.com/maya/index.html
are you using this plugin with maya, or is t-junction natively supported?
anyway, seems NURBS have progressed since the last time I tried them, and your work definately shows them off in all their capacity.

01-10-2006, 10:20 AM
metamesh,BinarySoup,Mindsurfer, thanks for the feedback. I am very grateful.
The t-junction I used is just a method we all can use in maya no need for any plugin but I think with T-splines it'll be easier to animate.
Now, I posted my last model I did.
I am actually less confident of this model so I hope I could get a lot of feed back.
please tell me where its wrong or strange. thanks in advance. (C&C very welcome.)

amazing, never seen nurmsb models like this. I didnt even have to try to guess who this was. It was instant recognition.
You couldnt give us larger wires could you? Im a poly modeller, and im trying to leanr nrubs, got the technical stuff pretty much done but when it comes to technique, what method do you use, layout splines? then creat the surface, or model its out and then make the surface live? let us know pleaseeeeeee.
well maybe the biggest critic could be that he doesn't look enough like Tom Cruise but too much like Dustin Hoffman ?!?

How can one give critique on this? Is this the normal level of quality the students at you school have? I must say it is simply stunning. Those models are instantly recognizable. I think Dustin Hoffman is equaly amazing as Gene Hackman.
If you make a tutorial video on how to model like that, I'd buy it! Stunning! Just stunning!

amazing work. a lot of likeness and character in the models.

stunning.
i'm realy interested why you opted to use NURBS for character modeling?
have you ever tried polygons/subD?
...from what i see you used maya for this, there's some realy cool poly/subD applications arround (maya doesn't realy have the best workflow/tools arround), i wont name any ... it's a matter of taste anyway :)
looking forward to see more models from you.

Spectacular models
I have no criticism for you as I am no where near your level of skill and couldn't model something that realistic if my life depended on it.
It would be great if you could put together a quick tutorial on how you created these heads. I have always been intimidated and aggravated when trying to model with nurbs, but after seeing what you can accomplish I may just take a stab at it once more.

Looks like polymesh simply converted to NURBS mesh. People want to know how you kept your seams together while editing their faces.
More odd though is that you act like your work is not worthy for viewing and you're rather vague as to how you model when asked by everyone here.
jjcoolio
01-11-2006, 08:47 AM
Thank you folks for your comments. I think I will make a tutorial on the next model or on my existing model soon (I think after my graduation though) -> first gotta to get a job. The rent here is totally insane :(
I also made a celebrity model with polys but I'm still polishing the model.(hope I can finish it soon to post)
I know a lot of students at school that have great nurbs models and much prefer to model them in nurbs(don't know actually why- I think the reason was the instructors) but now they are also doing a lot of polygon modeling and zbrushing too.
Phrenzy84: I actually start with the eye then go through the face and on. I don't build the curves on the face mesh like in the Gnomon DVDS. I just use a simple sphere for the face and make the pole into the mouth and go on. I mostly use attach and detach in my shelf and place it in my marking menu for faster modeling. if there is any more questions about nurbs modeling the I would love to answer.
Here's my existing model for my finals.(this is a higher resolution wireframe) This model is one of my models which I really like since it took a lot of time to refine. (though I 'm still working on the body)

Yeah! That's what I was thinking too. He is very humble I guess. First impression was that those are some marvalous Z-brushed renders, but it turns out to be Nurbs. I was like "NO WAY"! I looking forward too the tutorial. I think the nose is very hard to do.

01-11-2006, 02:20 PM
whoa!, and the hits just keep on coming! again I'm amazed at the fact they're all NURBS. if someone forced me to crit at gunpoint, I'd say that perhaps the sunken area around the temples are somewhat too pronounced, but that may just aswell be the lighting/angle/failure in my perception. like others, I'd love to see some progress shots as to better grasp your workflow, since your work has rekindled an interest in NURBS technology for me. but then again, I'd rather see more of your excellent works! :D
oh, any chance of a wire for Dustin aswell?
btw, I for one welcome your humbleness, the "look at me, I'm so goddamn awesome" style never really sat well with me, no matter how correct the proclamation may be (which in your case it would).

BInarySoup: thnx for the crits. I really appreciate it. I'll keep that in mind. The reason why I posted already-done models is because I never had a chance to post here while I made the heads. before I call em done I needed some crits and comments. and for the dustin wire frame I'll soon post a shot.
toontje: Thanks for your understanding. I've actually got a lot of problems in my models more than anyone else. Btw, for nurbs nose I made my own topology to make a simple nose(like the female I posted), later on I found out other people were already using that method.
Luki: thanks a lot. I hope I could get better.
Dezz: Thank you. I wish the best for you, too
Kwak: Thanks a lot. Btw, I've seen a lot of great work here and in mr levi's modeling forum.
I must say I've been a big fan of your work from a long time ago.
AndrewHwang: Thanks, Andrew. I'll try to post some bodies soon(I hope) after they are decent enough to post. The main volume doesn't take a lot but refining really takes a lot of time and endurance.(I'm sorry I can't estimate the exact time). Thanks and Good luck to your work!
=BlackNull=: Thanks for the comments. I really love your work. I actually textured a face a year ago. Had a hard time with the hair but I'll have to go deal with it soon. Can't wait to see your final image!

Your work is outstanding sorry if i am sounding like a fan boy but your control of nurbs is amazing haven't seen this detailed or physically accurate depictions of people on here. Its very hard to capture likeness and you at even just a glance have captured them very well. I can't wait to see full figured charcters from. Do you plan on doing any? Also i would like to know how lon geach bust takes you? Do you ever work with polys and have you any plans to use zbrush in the future ? Anyway outstanding work.

thanks alot for the Dustin Hoffman wireframe, very interesting to see how you achive all those details and especially how you lay out the patches. also really looking forward to see how you do your patch layout for bodies, there is obviously alot more preplanning when using nurbs as opposed to polygon box-modeling, but your layout looks superclean to me, and the meshes are as already said, insanely good.
I remember there was another nurbs modeler here like a year ago who presented some superb stuff, I think it was some geisha girl, david beckam and benjamin franklin, sadly I couldn't fint the thread again, as I was thinking you'd might be interested in them, especially since he modeled them full body iirc.

He was one of the best three or four patch modelers I remember who graduated from my school. I only know that he's working in one of the best animation companies in US right now.
Thank you folks for the warm comments. I really appreciate it. The heads were all done in maya nurbs except the one bellow.
Now I'm having a hard time modeling with polys.(the hair and the eyebrowse are nurbs thought) This is a work in progress of another celebrity head I'm doing right now.(It's not a recent one but I think I'll have to fix it till I graduate.) might look weird though:) I don't really have much confidence in this one..(I'm not really proud of this one but I don't have anything to hide.) It needs a lot of work but actually I'm getting tired a bit and this might be my last celebrity till I graduate.
please tell me what you think. C&C very welcome.

Keep up the good work, love to see more stuff coming from you.

well, it would be shameful if I didn't recognize Dolph Lundgren, given that he is a fellow swede :D though here he is in the guise of russian Ivan Drago from Rocky 4 unless I'm mistaken.
if you are having troubles with polygons it sure doesn't show in the end result. as per usual I'd love to see a wireframe, particularly interesting to compare your polygon layout against your nurbs layout. also, out of curiosity it would be interesting to know if you do box or detail out when polygon modeling? sorry for harrassing you with all these workflow based questions, when what you really want is constructive critisism, but I personally find your models pretty much flawless in terms of likeness, and I'm not really qualified to determine the quality of nurb meshes, as I have but little experience with them.

NURBS... I tried using them a bit, and nearly frustrated myself to death...
Thus, I have to give you 10 stars for using patchmodelling and doing it so darn well. Honestly, I have no idea how you do it, but your work is really incredible. If I could get my polymodelling to look like your nurbs modelling, I'd be a happy man.

Thank you for the warm comments and advice. I didn't expect this thread to come up again :)
Here is a wire of dolph as requested. sorry its a bit late. :) the hair was done in nurbs.
The head was made some time ago so I guess it needs more work. (I started with nurbs and converted to polys in the early stage.)
I am currently improving audery, and dustin.. I hope I could post a new update(which might take some time).

I will try to use this post, just in case If I make a new nurbs head celebrity and show the proccess of making a nurbs head in the future. Thank you for the warm compliments and advice.
C&C is always very welcome..or any questions of modeling in nurbs if there might be..
Numse: I just use simple nurbs cone and add iso parms..make it thin and bend the cones to make a single eye lash and then copy them(array them around the eyelid.)

Excellent Work !! .... not sure how far you're taking these models with regards to realism ? .... At their current stage, they resemble sculptures, like marble statues, and nailed the likeness of each person you've chosen to model perfectly, ... If you know how to use ZBrush ?, ...these could look rather scary in the realism dept.
Fantastic work !!

I don't know, I tend to be kind of a skeptic at times. I'm curious if any kind of 3D scan data, Zbrush, or some form of polygon conversion was used in the assistance of creating such models. There is a significantly noticable level of difference in the Hoffman and Hackman models, when compared to the two female models presented. One, which is a fictional elf character which I'm guessing probably started from limited, non-celebrity references, and the other is of an older, deceased Hepburn. And considering the order of work posted, and that you said the male models were older work, I find it difficult to believe they were achieved purely from pushing CVs.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying any of them are bad in the least. I think they are all awesome patch models. But as I stated earlier, I just feel the amount of detail and geometical complexity between the previously stated models is of nearly night and day difference. And I would be interested in seeing more, non-celebrity models which have been brought to the same level of detail as the Hoffman and Hackman ones.

I didn't quite suppose that this thread would come up again like I said from my last post:)
but thank you folks for the warm welcomes and compliments!
For now I am only concentrating on modeling. I know how to texture but I want to finish the my final project models(which is almost all)nurbs in best shape when I graduate.
spyraux, thanks for the comments but I am used to nurbs mostly. If you were using only nurbs patches for 3 whole years(like the crazy way I did) then you'll would know what I mean. When I first came to this school a lot of pros were modeling in nurbs. this made me start nurbs and I really used it for all of my projects for 3 years. The best instructors I met here were all using nurbs(except the legendary Jeff UNAY and TAREQ MIRZA). A lot of AAU students still use nurbs(at least the dudes I know).
I convert from nurbs to polys when its only for texturing and I personally do not like that since a lot of detail will be washed out. Liking nurbs is just my personal preference.
especially for heads I like nurbs cause it gives it a more fleshy organic feeling when rendered.(just my thought though..)
After zbrush came out I didn't change tools since I did not want to throw away my 3 years work down the drain. (I am learning zbrush so hopefully I can do my next project with it.)
But actually I still know that there are some places I wish to improve which I might work on in the future. The old 2 male models are my early models but this doesn't mean that they are out of date. I still polish them which means that they took a long time..than any others. (I must have rendered gene for a thousand times during this proccess... to get to that point.) the other females and dolph is more recent but was been done in a rather short time than the others thats why the level of detail is different I guess)
If its a full body project then I would make the models lighter since my computer is not the fastest in the market. The other female models are more lighter since they don't have any wrinkles and I am trying to make the models more lighter and more efficient as I studied.(I don't wanna make everything heavy:))
btw. I don't really push cvs. I mostly use the artisan brush tool.(almost 90percent) and lattices. (lattices are awesome!)
I know some modelers around me who has skills and talent which makes me wanna cry but never show up in cgtalk. Hope we could see them here some day :)
If there is any more questions about my projects or about nurbs modeling than I would love to answer!
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d152/jjcoolio/audreydemo9.jpg
Here's a new small update for audrey.
I've changed her face a bit to look more younger, changed the hair color. and changed the forehead, defined the neck muscles abit.... I think it looks a bit cleaner than before. Hope its better..
After I've been dealing with these crazy celebrity heads I start to think that its really impossible to make a perfect head which looks exactly like the real celebrity head itself in every direction. There are too many photos taken at so many different ages which really makes it hard to proceed. When I'm making these heads I just hope its nearly recognizable.

well, I've said it before and I'll say it again, disgustingly good work. you are like a big time advertise for nurbs modeling. any chance you'd like to show some images on how you progress with a nurbs model, where do you start (eyes?), how the base nurbs mesh looks before you start with artisan. also, by following the seams I've managed to get (I think) a pretty good idea of your patch flow, however it would be great if you had some shots that shows the patch layout a bit more clearly, particularly the ears.
ok, sorry for all these requests, but you did say that it was ok to ask about your nurbs modeling ;) I understand you'd rather be modeling than answering this thread, so ignore these questions unless you are bored or something!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d152/jjcoolio/JINWOOEAR.jpg
Ladies and gentlemen, step right up! We have some fresh ears for sale...(just kidding).
Hope this helps making em ears in nurbs.
I think Type C,D is more easy to make than type A or B. I made type c with just One patch and Type D with a nurbs cylinder. Type B is the most complicated. Type A is a version I made to get rid of the ear hole.(I made up type A for a lighter version without the earhole.) The good thing about type D is..that it has a ear hole(it doesn't show because of the camera angle though)
Nowadays I mostly use type C because its light and efficient I guess.
(Type B's structure was created by the Nurbs Lord, Seryong Kim(Wildbrain studios). I think I should give him credits about it. I don't really know who created type c or d but I learned so much from Seryong KIM).
I also learned so much from JUNG MIN CHANG(Sonyimage works), and also Sunny wei(ILM),Jeung sung Hong(ILM), Jeff Unay(Weta),Tareq Mirza(EA). Thank you so much for teaching me!! I owe you so much and I wish the best for you all!!!

If any WIP thread deserves frontpage, it's this. I think the moderator was willing to make an exception for this one. And a well-made exception it is.
I guess for anyone who's just first to drop by this thread and see these models, you may think they are just another bunch of celebrity modeled heads, but it is both the accuracy of the likeness captured and the fact that they were made entirely out of nurbs(no zbrush, or displacement) that makes it simply astonishing.
Sorry, didn't read the whole Thread, but Your work is truly outstanding. One Question, did You use ZBrush? If not you just have to get it!!!

amazing! never seen nurbpatch model for 3-4 years , and your model are not like normal nurbpatch model , your models are awesome and capture the celebrity look, for me , nurbpatch model is a bad dream haha  I can't make it look good , there are still hole left when render , (i'm confuse when I have to rebuild , detach ,attach etc:wise:)so if you can show us the entire process ,it would be cool!
awesome!
Jinwoo, these are fantastic models. What's more impressive is your humble attitude. Best of luck in your future endeavors. :)
Wow! As "original" to see in our Zbrush days, as incredibly well done. For this excelence in mastering this technique as your talent for making them so recognisable, it's no doubt 5 stars work. I was just about to unplug this thread as the images were down due to excess bandwidth, but they seem to be up again now....
Just to clarify, there's no rule about not plugging WIP's on the front page. I plugged these in the first place as I consider them to be really good likenesses of the celebs, very full of life and really well modelled. (in nurbs no less!)

Wow, very very nice work jjcoolio. What sets these models apart from so many others (regardless of the fact that such detail is present in purely NURBS mesh form) is the likeness and more importantly the life that the models seem to have. No textures at all and still there's something 'alive' about them. Thanks for posting these. I'm amazed at your modeling skills and attention to detail & personality.

Sick modelling, well earned frontpage.. The cheek detail on Hoffman and Hackman is brilliant, and Hepburn is as sweet as she ever was. As to the Swede (whatshisnameagain?), I remember him as a bit more of a stern personality. A few wrinkles in the eye and a more focused look, I think would bring the personality in better. Maybe tilt the skull forward a few degrees so he looks up under his eyebrows. Just remember he's a rough character.
DOLPH LUNDGREN!!! Thats his name! Went to check it on the net, his homepage is at http://www.dolphlundgren.com/ ,and he's much rougher and thinskinned. Hope that helped.

I'm sorry the images were down. I just got up a few mins ago...
jk_ksu: I used only photo references. The hard part was to collect all audreys photos. I used a nurbs plane and mapped the side and front of photo in the early stage. After the model was getting better I took of the image planes and tried to just compare witht the photos and the render. To be honest Audrey was one of the hardest model in my entire cg life. her porportions of her face is totally different from other women and I really wanted to give up many times....

Congratulation for the front page.
It was great luck to teach you for me.
Keep working and I saw your 'old man in the seat'.
It was awesome!

hey jj,
i agree, those models are more than recognisable, i knew the second i saw them who was who.
i think you broke some kind of record with your WIP thread being plugged like this..
for future model in zbrush, make sure you remember how much time it took you to model with nurbs compared to the time it took you with Z2.
i have seen some celebrity heads in zbrush, non at your level. so if you cant replicate your celebrity head likeness in zbrush, please dont quit your nurb modelling.
thats it :)

designch: Wow, this is great! I'm really glad your visiting my thread! I heard that you are extremely busy at Sony Imageworks but I hope you will take care of your health also.
I'm really looking forward to see some great action and 3d models in the new Spiderman III movie. I absolutulety have no doubt that you would do a great job!
I remember the day you start teaching me nurbs patches and I could never forget what you've done for me. Thank you so much and I'll keep in touch. Happy new year and hope all your wishes all come true at 2006.
ps: I'll try to move on for some body work and animals as you mentioned.
warpyy: Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I will always keep that in mind and check out the timeframe as you mentioned.
I think using Zbrush will completely reduce a significant amount of time ..I hope:)
maranello55: I hope you liked the models, and I wish the best for you. oh..for arranging the reference.. I actually use the image planes just like every one else only at the starting point. If I have a really hard time in the middle of sculpting then I use some more references and import them in maya. But mostly I try to compare the render with the photo and try to rely on my senses. For every model I had a time that I wanted to quit but I had to carry on. thanks for asking.

Thank you so much cgtalk, and folks for the warm welcomes! What's not to believe...your work is absolutely amazing! Just gorgeous. It's not just the model that you captured/portray, but expression as well. It almost looks like they could come alive, like your waiting for them to look at you or start talking. Great job!

Looks great! I think with Dolph Lundgren and Dustin Hoffman (those are the two first pics, right?), You have to think for a short second before it registers who they are, but really only a very short time. Hepburn is spot on, Gene Hackman pretty good.
Great job indeed, man!

hey Jinwoo, really tremendous work! You really deserve all the positive attention. I am also an AAU student in modeling ,but BFA. I have almost given up on the CG department teaching me. I was wondering if you could recommend any teachers that are still there. I've only had lab techs with sub par work and sub par teaching skills. If your worried about a job when you graduate, I'm sure they would let you teach there. I was also wondering what focal length you model at when referencing photos. Thanks. Yowza!! - best CG I've seen for ages. No mistaking the likenesses. Like most ppl, I thought "ZBrush!" and was amazed that it's mostly NURBS. Please, please post a detailed tutorial because I don't think I'm the only one who's surprised that NURBS patches can hang together in such convoluted topology (topography?).
Can't offer much in the way of crits - your eye is better than mine. Just wondering how well this stuff can be animated - do the patches hang together when deformed?

Juggernaut: Thnx a lot, I'm really glad you like em.
plaf: Thanks so much for your honest comment! I will definitely work on those models :)
Eidan, DaJuice: I hope I can make a tutorial as soon as I graduate :) I mostly went over all the dvds about nurbs modeling and I think the alias dvd - modeling a human head(?) was quite decent and has all it needs I think.
Trinnity: I love you past work of the asian female warrior. really splendid work you did! Thanks for the reply and I wish you the best my friend.
hazzadus: I don't know, man. I think I should get at least 2 or 3 years of experience b4 I do some teaching. I'm really sad that almost everyone who was teaching 3d modeling left. I advise you to meet your student advisor and check every instrutors profile and register for a couple of classes you like and after taking the first weeks class you could drop some. msg me for any other questions.. I would love to help.
send2raj: Actually the people who replied my post like Seryong Kim(Wildbrain),anotherhong(Jung seung Hong-ILM),Jungmin Chang(Sony Imageworks) are way, I mean way better nurbs modelers than me(I can't even imagine my work compared to theirs). But thnx so much for the compliments!
OSSYFFER: I hope you like em. I'm still have to fix a lot of things but it'll take some time I guess:)
Rao_B: Thnx a lot. I kinda like how she came out. hope I could do a better job on the next one.
mindrot: I'm glad the images are up too. I had to pay some dough to maintain the bandwidth :). I really like the work on you website and good luck to your future projects!
As for texturing, I think I'll try to get a job without texturing(Since I could never beat those professional texture dudes), if I fail then the textures would definitley come after.
Lederhosen: I guess a lot of artists convert them to polygons before texturing and rigging in most studios. I guess it needs a lot of r&d to use patches to get it animated. But there are still some companies I know that use em... btw I think I should seriously think about the tutorials since I see many mates here are looking forward to see it. Thanks for your reply and hope to see you around :)

Man, your work is really amazing. I thought character modeling in NURBS was kinda "old school" stuff but I was definetely out of my mind... Are these models something you've been doing as a study or are they some kind of professional work? Will you convert them to polys for texturing? Will they be sent over to rigging/animation or will you do this yourself? I really would like to see it
Wow those are great, how exactly are you doing these models? the form and "flow" almost looks like the've been done in claytools or freeform and converted into patches afterwards. Did you paint the details with artisan or how did you do this?
Bloody Awesome work, i really like that stuff, even the color of the models remind me of claytools :D

I'd like to know - What perspective FOV to you model in, max defualt is 45 , i'm not sure of maya'. And how do you set up so your camera matches your referneces images. In terms of perspective distortion,
Thanks. May sound a silly question , but it's always where i fall down

ok - I know you gonna throw tomatoes at me -these are great models but, it just that my opinion is that they've been modeled in freeform or claytools and patched up
here's the way it's done in freeform and maya
http://users.adelphia.net/~zpetroc/ff_2_Maya.htm#
I've seen the videos from senseble many times (http://www.sensable.com/products/Maya/index.asp) to know how the voxels look like when modeled in claytools - the roughness of the clay that gets increased and looks like a jagged surface (take a look at the area near the ear -does that happen to nurbs surfaces - aren't they supposed to be smooth always?)
look at the nostril and think why would anyone want to make bumps in that area - it happens when you use the haptic devise and carve the form
I may be missinformed but don't the guys at ILM or Sony just use syslice or other software to create the patches from the scaned data - does anyone sits in front of the computer and models such details just pushing the verteses on a nurb - how artistic is that?
if you have patiance - you can see that this http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d152/jjcoolio/demo3.jpg
has claytools writen all over it
I remind you that this is my personal opinion - the artist is great it's jus that the tools used seem wrong to me - that's why I wanted to say - hope you all don't get mad or something ...
Andrei-Covali
01-27-2006, 01:38 PM
one more thing - I hate when people out of envy try to ruin someones post or work - done with a lot of patience etc...this is not the case - the work is really really great
but it's like everyone sees black when I see that it is white - maybe Zack could take a look and tell me that I am getting sick - maybe from to much work? :)

Since it is clear that your work is very good, maybe I should jump off the praise parade. Yes you have excellent examples of realistic faces. However, what are the prospects for animating these? I would be more impressed if these expressions were achieved using an animatable deformation system. Also, you have tons of heads, I would add a body to one, let us know if you do, I for one am interested in seeing the result. Good work though!

Claytools/ FF is a great tool, and while these models look similar to the imported results of Zac, They could have been made with artisan, lets wait and see :)

akin: Thanks for the compliments :)
Antropus: Thank you so much :) I saw your work here at cgtalk. very very inspiring work.
doodlyD: WOW, thanks very interesting:) Actually I picked it up how to do the eye browse froma guy who won the AAC springshow. Great nurbs job he did.(Our school is full of nurbs lovers) the image bellow wasn't fully tessllated which made those edgy looks:)
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d152/jjcoolio/dolphdemo4.jpg
well, I'll have to edit this post to make it very clear...
This is the way I do eye browse. same with gene. simply making a patch formed in to a eye browse(slightly interesected) then add enormous amount of iso parms(I use the double mel script) and then sculpt the way how the eye browse grows. note that this head is not smoothed, if I mesh smooth it it would get slightly smaller so the intersection areas would be more smaller. It doesn't look natural but hey, It's a bit more detailed. If you look at my view port or render you would know thats its not one piece of geometry.
(You must understand because this trick is really not known to many nurbs modelers.
I guess you never seen this type which is really rare.(maybe thats why it might cause the confusion) But some students in my school use this kind of technique,
and for the pics for dustin... use any of those heads and lower the tesslation options and render it out. you would see the same edgy result. These happen because when you attach and detach nurbs patches the tesslation values automatically gos very low. and if you render them, it would look edgy. I guess I didn't change the tesslation value b4 I rendered for dustin. Please test any head you have in nurbs and look for your self my friend.
If any one modeled a nrbs head they would absolutely know. please ask a friend who patches heads in nurbs and ask them.
if you want some tests using my head then please say so. I would be glad to show you the result...
I hope this answers you questions..
monica.ta: Thank you.
A_K: Hmm. I've seen a lot of your work at levi's forum.. I'm sad that you will be disappointed but they are made up in 100% NURBS ^______^ (well...except dolph)
If you live in San francisco then I would love to show you my models and the proccess.
and about clay tools..Hmm. I don't even know what is clay tools. Oh, I saw it once at a 3d magazine of zack pedrocs article once, a month ago. Interesting :) and even if I made em in such tool (which I don't even know?) would there be any difference?
Modeling is just modeling. It doesn't mean anything..3d applications are just a tool :) don't you think so?
If claytools is that good then I would love to learn though. But I'd prefer doing patches. Don't want to throw out my 3 years work on it :)
I think zbrush might be a better tool thats why I am having a hard time learning zbrush
I hope Mr zack could look on my works to confirm. I could even send some data if he wanted to look closer. Nurbs is very very light in data :) gene is only a few megas :)
But I thank you A.K for the interest in my models. take care and see you around.
antropus: Thnx for visiting my thread and dropping a line. I really am inspired by you marvalous work. I hope one day I could zbrush em polys like the way u do.

Do you do traditional sculpture???
Congratulations really !! 5 star quality work!
Oh I'm sorry:) I'll fix that
Hey, no problem. Keep up the good work.
To those questioning the method used:
I don't like fanboyism any more than most people. However, even if they were carved out of voxels, I'd say these are great looking models. I don't use Maya nor Clay Tools, but it's perfectly possible to achieve the kind of details with CV vertices and their weights using NURBS. Jinwoo mentioned that he rarely pulls/pushes cv's and that he uses Artisan brushes. I don't know how that works in Maya, but in 3DSMax, you have to convert NURBS to a poly object before you can paint deformation (similar to Maya's Artisan brushes).
In either case, unless someone posted a 3D scan and claimed that they were modeled in NURBS, which in this case would have been difficult to do because of the access to these famous celebrities, I'd give the guy some credit.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d152/jjcoolio/fairytest.jpg
The original design was done by a sculptor I don't really know. I heard that he is very big though. please tell me his name if someone knows him. I changed the pose a bit for the right arm. I bought the small sculpture over the net and modeled it in maya. its not 100 percent finished so there might be some cracks here and there before I close em patches:)
100 % nurbs patches except the stones and the grass, and the wings.
the rock base is not smoothed yet so its a bit edgy.
C&C very welcome

I would love to see some closeups on that model. More angles?

You're truly very talented:bowdown:

nardes thank you so much. I will be strickly honest with you. I used some of the body parts I made for faster modeling. I really don't have anything to hide. I think it took a month(it might took longer because of the pose)to make it but I'm always do a couple of models so I don't exactly know the time frame. just keep on fixing the parts I'm not satisfied.
well if you didn't do it in clawytools... then you should get your hands on it!
however, as i said, well done (no matter if it is claytools or nurbs or whatever)
the way some areas looks just remembered me of claytools...
so keep upo the great work, i'd love to see one of you pieces finished tho ;)

The shoulder blades look slightly strange, a little too sharp.
The dress is suberbly well modeled.
A question , are these modeled for something? stature,. art or movies? I know they are practice but do you have a selected purpose in mind?
The waist area looks very well structured, this kind of thing is so much harder in zbrush or polys where you just cant terminate the detail area into nothing as you have. The collection of edges produces really bad results, and without a very long time tweaking and superb knowledge of ending these in quads along a minute surface - very hard. The same limitations willl apply in zbrush.
I'm not sure but I imagine that chain slightly dragging the dress a little more downward, and the dress being that wid and not held by a hoop, I can't see it falling that way. Nevertheless fantastic modeling work with a great feel to the volume. Cool hair feathers.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Thank you so much, okay heres one thats finished I think.
All nurbs patches except the small pillars in the side of the chair.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d152/jjcoolio/popejinwoo.jpg
This one was extremly tough because the cloth which is covering his arms and his laps are just one single patch. I had to bent a single nurbs patch and bend it like a real cloth which was a really really big challenge for me. I hope you like it ..it was a hard one.
I even wanted to give up during the process because of the folds which were hard to make.

hahahaha, dude you need a drink seriously, those inroganic models are great, i like the attention to detail, pretty inhuman if you ask me:):):scream:
Wow man, the depth of detail and just overall quality of your work
is really boggling my mind.
Especially the fact that it's nurbs patches! When I read that most of this stuff is nurbs patches it really blew me away.
I didn't know people even still used that technique anymore!
What is it that keeps you working in that medium, and why is it that you haven't
switched over to subD's(like seemingly everyone else).
The only other times I see this much detial, seems to be with subD+Zbrush works,
where you can work the fine details in with simple brush strokes.
But working with that many CV's and still dealing with a network of nurbs surfaces is another skill alltogether...

HOLY....!!!
WHAT THA .....!!!
JUMPIN' F***N.......!!!
When did all these new models come in? I thought this thread was just growing with more compliments to your astounding organic models, so I stop by to see how're things going and you've got pages and pages of models! both organic and inorganic. I don't even know where to complement you. Are you seriously man or machine?
Your nickname should be 'NURBSpimp' or 'KillerBspline'
I hope you're sending your work to Expose4. People have mentioned earlier about claytools and this and that but seriously there are a ton of tools out there. Regardless to all that it's what the artist does with them is what counts. Even if this were a pure subd, zbrush etc whatever (insert-latest-one-click-tool-here) these models are simply BEAUTIFUL.
The organic models are still my favorite because they're untextured/not even rendered, leave alone Mr. GI and Final Gather, etc and yet have such strong personalities to them, central to the modeling itself.
I wish I could sit on your shoulder and just watch how you do all this. Please post a tutorial if you ever find the time - I've always been very wary of those evil Nurbs patches. They haunt me:D
All the very best to your future.

btw - the hard surface ones and the environment ones are done with using polys too.(nurbs+polys)
this gun was designed by myself..polys and nurbs.
Tad: I must thank you for such kind words my friend, I still do sub-ds too but only after I make nurbs models and convert them to polys or sub-ds.
I will slowly try to do some poly, zbrush stuff. Good luck to you, mate and thanks again!
jdsb: :) I don't drink a lot lately but I guess I had something special today. Thanks a lot for mentioning it :) I hope I had a lot o time to drink or either sleep...
Cyborgguineapig- thank you so much. I hope I can keep the passion enough as I go on.
AndrewHwang- Andrew Hwang! Thanks man for the compliment. I really appreciate it. I really love how you model and good luck to your projects and models as well my friend! I hope I could do a good job in zbrush like you. I would have a lot of questions and I hope I could ask some soon!:)
Riash - I don't know man, they wouldn't like some untextured stuff to post in their book. But, thanks for the advice. I'll try to make a tutorial as soon as I get a job after my graduation which is at the end of May. I wish the best to you and thank you for the kind words. Many many thanks!

Okay these models are fantastic... that it... just fantastic! :D
I really hope people are still visiting this thread otherwise I'm going to have to plug it again in a few days. Do you have a reel that we could plug?
Also just wondering if you had any textured images.
images/rating/rating_5.gif modelling, fantastic
[edit] I apologise if this post is redundant I havn't read through the thread it's all eye candy ;)

It would be a great honor if it could be pluged it again. unfortunately I don't have a reel yet. i know how to uv and texture but I don't really have anything textured to show right now :) sorry about that.
But I still have a couple more models to show. I just hope every one enjoys it.
I don't think this kind of honor would come across again so I don't really have anything to hide.
Thank you so much.

Hey JJ,
Great new gun model!, and the environments are very realistic and well made.
Just wondering, on average , what were the times taken? , hours put in to these projects, say ... the sculpture or the pope?. thanks.

stripe: Thanks again :)
For most projects the hard surface ones it took an average three weeks up to 3 months. Some of them are mixed with the models I already made like the harbor scene.
To be honest I am not a fast modeler but I try to model better as I go on. the hard surface ones and the environments are mostly done last year and the organic ones are more recent I guess. For organic models it would take an average three weeks up to one semester. But these I posted would take more than three weeks since I made them for my portfolio.
I could do it more faster I guess if I'm only modeling one model though. I think with the body parts I made, I could model faster if I started a new model, hopefully.
Sheepfactory: Thanks mate, I really appreciate it. I hope to see you around in the lab too.

I can't believe what I am seeing. You are amazing. Everything that you've modelled screams detail and painstaking effort. I am in awe of your patience and the keen eye that you have that enables you to model so beautifully. Your work is truly inspiring and makes me want to work much harder to perhaps, one day, be able to create the stuff on the same level as you.
My jaw is still on the floor.

the thing that really sets your faces apart, as everyone mentions, is the subtle and lifelike expression.. so used to seeing people in a zombie state on the 3d forums, i'm guilty as anyone of that.
do you sculpt it directly into poses? perhaps the quest to make a rig for us animators has caused us to lose sight of the power of just making the frigging thing look how it should look.. theres no cheating in computer graphics :)
its also interesting to see somebody still using nurbs for so much.. using nurbs makes me feel stupid, but i can understand and have done organic patch modelling with it, sure.. but i have never seen another nurbs modeller who acheives such flowing and expressive organic forms with it.. these would be amazing models no matter what, but NURBS?? how do you keep track of the overall volume with such detailed sculptures, in a nurbs patch mesh?
also, the sheer volume of work, considering you probably must sleep at least once a week ;)

You are such an accomplished modeler, it's insane how lifelike this characters look. If you can one day find the time to write a tutorial, I know a lot of us would be very grateful to you. I for one have wanted to know how to model with NURBS patches for the longest time but cant find a good tutorial that can explain what is needed to make the patches blend perfectly. I have books and have look online many times but nothing that can really explain to me how to do so in a successful way.
Good job my friend, very good indeed.
