View Full Version : Subsurface Scattering Shader
Hey guys,
I would Like to use SSS shader with mental ray, I've painted my color map, bump map, specular map, displacement map,
Now the question here is How do I apply all my maps to the SSS shader its quite different from the regular Phong shader.
Another thing regarding Mental Ray is, I am having trouble rendering bump maps, the bump map I created Renders perfetly with all the details when I use Maya renderer. however when I use mental ray renderer the bump map detail disperes I can hardly see any bump map detail.
what am I doing wrong?
Thx

Which SSS shader are you using? If you're using the fast skin shader, you should read through the PDF document here for information on using it:

Be sure to download the createAndAssignShader.mel script as well.

Oops, somehow I didn't see the previous replies :surprised
Hey guys,
I tried out that tutorial, what I am getting isn't the same as that tutorial describes. that tutorial doesn't show me how to apply displacement maps... which I need the most.
Also my Back color SSS isn't working for some reason.

To apply a displacement, simply open the Hypershader, and create a Displacement Shader, and hook it up to the displacement parameter of the objects shading group. It takes quite a bit of work to set up all the displacement parameters correctly though, and I don't have time to find and list all of them here! But if you're rendering with Mental Ray, be sure to create an approximation (Window> Rendering Editors> Mental Ray> Approximation Editor) and set that up correctly. I am sure a Google search will find some tips for this.
As for your backscatter... can't really offer any advice on it since you've not shown any screengrabs or renders.
hey,
here is a quick render using the misss_fast_Skin_shader

as you can see behind the ear its not showing the red back SSS
