***UPDATE 1/29:

-----------------

Hey everyone, I am making a scene inspired by Rome, and some Thomas Cole paintings...

This is the first version, but this was rushed for school and I am not happy with it... http://jonmdesign.net/work/3d/sunrise01.jpg

But now I have time to work on it some more so here is what I will be doing to it... as you can see I am changing the perspective and composition, the lighting (its day not sunrise) I will also make other architectural changes....
The bridge is going to be re-done and a whole lot more detail added to it...
I am going to add in more details like statues flora etc, textures will be redone... people, boats and chariots etc will also be added in... so in other works this is just the start of it:

http://jonmdesign.net/art/sunriseempire/upload5.jpg

I am very open to ideas, especially on composition/camera placement, no matter how radical they maybe, I have the time and I want this to be the best work I can do, so help me out :)

One other possiblity is that I can add a giant tidal wave in the background and call this Atlantis... So I don't have a final plan yet, so I hope I can make this turn out good :)

looking nice... go for it.. ad a lot of detail, put some attention on some ground stones.. some gone, broken and such.. maybe some ppols of water on the ground, make sure the water is realistic.. some nice distortion, make a few layers if needed, to give it depth, place some simple fishes in it.. very vague.. just simple mesh will do.

ad dirt on the walls where the water has been moss etc.. well youve allready sayd youd put detail in ,so im looking forward to that.

about the camera position. i think its best from this side yes, but the angle i dont know, would know if i could play with the camera angle.. maybe looking between the two statues a little.

keep up the good work

Looks promissing. I like that "rushed" one allthough it has a low res;)

I admire the lighting.... What software is that?
About the textures, I would suggest to get a lot more dirt around....
The bridge needs a lot of more dirt and moss especially where it meets the water....
Waiting to see more.... all the best..

Looking good. Maybe vary the structures on the left a bit, less pillars and some more variety in the design. Maybe the classic colliseum (sp?)

Yes, the light is the Problem... fo course, there are textures missing, but your example of the Bridge shows: you are on the right way! Keep this qualy to the rest!
But things like Global Illum and Final Gather/Occlusion is inconceivable these days - do a favor to yourself and try to use this!

cheers:thumbsup:

Great job; I'm really impressed. How accurate are you striving to be? I ask because those statues aren't correct; they're too large and the type of statue (looks like Athena/Minerva) that would be inside a temple, not outside on display. Rather, something like a quadriga (4-horse chariot) would be typically found on that type of arch. Or some smaller togate figures (males in Roman toga, like senators).

Also, the buildings would not be all white; the Romans (and the Greeks before them) painted and gilded stuff like mad, whether columns, the carvings and other fixtures on buildings and temples.

Your right, and I am adding more color and everything to make it more vibrant. However I do not intend for it to be historically accurate, this is more of a fantasy style with me using my own unique architecture and style, so I'll take an artistic license for this and make whatever looks good :) . I plan to have an actual real chariot crossing the bridge so I think I'll leave Athena…

thanks for your comment :)

update on the bridge:
http://jonmdesign.net/art/sunriseempire/upload10.jpg

The scene got too much for the renderer and my comp to handle so I had to spend a lot of time taming it... so now I'll be rendering in passes (bridge, left side, and right side)

I used dreamscape for some water... i'll try and get a screen of it up soon.

little bit more on this building...

I have done a lot more to everything, but it takes a while to composite it all together with high render times... but I'll try and get a complete total view up soon :)

If any of you were following this, just so you know I am not dead, I just have a slow computer :)

But rendering troubles aside I think just about everything is in there so far... heres a viewport screenscrap:

that's a crazy setup - no wonder it takes forever - hope you're rendering it in pieces LOL

I like the idea, kinda reminds me of some paintings of venice :)

Even though this is more advanced technicaly I prefer the First one with the sunrise. Yes I know it does not look as good as these, but is more atmospheric and moody which I prefer (nostalgia for the past) . My opinion is that you should not completly dismiss the sunrise or at least make two versions one during the day and one during the sunrise. (I love how the sun disappear between the statutes) :) :) :)

JonM

thats a good idea kilon, I'll look into that... I wanted to do this as day so more detail would show... but after this I'll do renderings of it at sunset/sunrise too :)

Intervain - yes I am rendering it in pieces (and it still takes forever) the left side, the right side, and the front bridge...

its about 2million polies right now :)

I am going to do a render tonight of one of the passes

wow, it's really impressive! I really hope you could add more here and there to make it totally unbeatable! and.. why don't you add some small birds in the sky in the far background ? just my thought though...I hope it wouldn't be too cheezy...

JonM
01-30-2006, 10:38 PM
cobra6: I see what you mean about the harbour, its suppose to be crowded :) But I think I can place the boats in a better composition... thanks for the heads up

jjcoolio: birds I suppose would be cheesy, but I am putting them in anyway :) , I also plan to add some land in the far background in order to split it up a little

Thanks for the responses !

I will like to adress some issues with your work:

1st THE CROWEDED HARBOUR

Well first of all it looks more like Athens than Rome because of the sea. As a matter of fact there are not enought ships in your harbour. Remember that you use the ancient world theme here. Both ancient Athens and Rome were empires which were in a constant state of War. Ships were the secret weapon of Athens and it was a city with a huge and powerful Navy that even the greater in Numbers of Persian Navy could not beat in the battle of Salamina (10 persian soldiers for 1 greek soldier, persians were able to deploy million of troops in that battle or hundrent of thousand , the precise number eludes me, but it was a batlle with a huge amount of ships in a tiny bit of sea space which athenians used inteligently to devestate the Persian Navy). Ships were a big thing those days. But then again it is your choice, however it seems to me or I would like to think that this is the entrance of a hero general after a huge victory!!!. So the city been crowed is a must, of course a again is a matter of composition. My attention is drawn on the building in the left hand with the columns. It seems like an Academy and I think it should be populated so to emphasize the social element of your city. Ships should be entering the harbour in perfect order as the soldier do while walking on the bridge to emphasize their discipline and organisation of the city.

2nd SHOULD YOU USE BIRDS ? Birds were very important those days as well because there were considered as omens of good and bad fortune. That relegious obsession of how the birds fly were part of the Greek and Romean culture. So it safe to assume that they used any means necessary to attract them.

3rd The building in the near front right is purple hmmmm! Well it seems a bit strange... but then again it may be just me.

All these of course are suggestions your work is already very good and may be inspiration for my next work. Please by all means .... keep getting me inspired... ;)

Wow I love Rome! Seems like a nightmare of a render for you but you seem passionate and inspired. Just render in passes! I'd love to see a couple Senate members walking together in their white robes behind the statues. As well, a coule big ships way off in the horizon would be neat also.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been around, I have been busy with lots of other stuff, plus this take a while to render

I changed the lighting around, what do you think of this new lighting setup?

Looking great.
I have two things which really jumped out at me immediately:

1. the animals and people are just too stiff - the eye is drawn to them intantly and there's nothing happening there - they look like little toys

2. the water needs some white highlights and fluffy foam around the boat :)

All in all I really like your progress though, keep it up:arteest:
